Job Overview: The NATO Researcher position within the Research Division (RD) is pivotal for the planning, organization, and execution of the NDC's research program. This role involves developing a comprehensive research agenda that addresses NATO partnerships, particularly in the MENA region, and NATO's policies towards these areas. The incumbent will be responsible for designing and implementing research methodologies that align with NDC objectives and academic standards. The position requires a strong emphasis on data collection, analysis, and assessment related to the research agenda. The researcher will prepare reports, academic papers, and technical documentation for Senior Courses, and will actively disseminate findings through workshops, lectures, and academic collaborations. Additionally, the role includes publishing and presenting research at conferences and participating in international academic and policy debates. The researcher will also support NATO's engagement efforts through academic education and research visits to the region, and may undertake Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) assignments both within and outside NATO boundaries.
Duties and Responsibilities: The NATO Researcher will have a diverse set of responsibilities, including:
Developing a research agenda focused on NATO partnerships and the MENA region, ensuring alignment with NDC objectives.
Designing and implementing research methodologies that meet academic standards.
Conducting data collection, analysis, and assessment related to the research agenda.
Preparing comprehensive reports, academic papers, and technical documentation for Senior Courses.
Supporting the dissemination of research findings through workshops, lectures, and collaborations with academic institutions.
Publishing research and presenting at conferences, seminars, and international debates.
Organizing events, conferences, and seminars related to the research agenda.
Engaging in international academic and policy debates, representing NATO at various events.
Conducting academic education and research visits to the MENA region to support NATO's engagement efforts. 1

Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess the following essential qualifications:
At least 8 years of relevant professional experience in international security, defense, and foreign affairs.
Strong knowledge of Middle East and Maghreb cultures and societies, gained through education and experience.
In-depth understanding of socio-political dynamics in the region and individual countries.
A proven research record, including publications and teaching experience on relevant topics.
Proficiency in Standard Automated Data Processing (ADP), with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and internet use.
Educational Background: The position requires a PhD in International Relations, Political Science, or a related discipline. This advanced educational background is essential for conducting high-level research and analysis in the context of NATO's strategic objectives and partnerships.
Experience: Candidates should have a significant level of experience, specifically at least 8 years in relevant fields such as international security, defense, and foreign affairs. Experience in academic settings, think tanks, or as a policy planning officer focusing on Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, and Gulf security issues is highly desirable.
Languages: The mandatory language requirement for this position is English, with a proficiency level of SLP 4444 according to STANAG 600
Additionally, a working knowledge of Arabic (SLP 2222) and/or professional knowledge of French (SLP 3333) is considered advantageous, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders in the region.
Additional Notes: The successful candidate will be offered a two-year definite duration contract, which may be followed by a further three-year contract. Employment in research positions shall not exceed five years. The role may require working outside normal office hours and involves potential travel. Appointment is subject to security clearance, medical approval, verification of qualifications, and successful completion of the accreditation process.
