Job Overview:
The East Africa Regional Technical Advisor I (TAI), Polio will provide strategic and technical leadership for the Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems (STRIDES) Activity, specifically focusing on polio eradication-related activities. This role involves ensuring that STRIDES polio activities align with global guidance, national policies, and donor regulations while delivering high-quality technical assistance across participating countries. The Advisor will oversee in-country implementation, working closely with global, regional, and country teams to troubleshoot challenges and adapt interventions to evolving contexts. The position requires a strong emphasis on capacity strengthening, mentoring, and technical assistance to local partners and government counterparts in areas such as polio surveillance, laboratory operations, and outbreak preparedness. The Regional TA will also contribute to FHI 360’s technical thought leadership by developing tools and guidance that enhance the organization’s visibility in polio eradication efforts.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Master’s Degree or its international equivalent in Health, Life/Social Sciences, International Development, or a related field. Project Management Certification is a plus. Candidates should have a strong understanding of polio eradication efforts and relevant public health experience, particularly in developing countries. The role demands excellent project management skills, the ability to set realistic priorities, and a deep understanding of the external environment affecting the organization. Strong diagnostic, analytical, and problem-solving skills are essential, along with the ability to influence and negotiate effectively with stakeholders.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s Degree or its international equivalent in a relevant field such as Health, Life/Social Sciences, or International Development. Additional qualifications such as Project Management Certification are advantageous and demonstrate a commitment to professional development in project management and public health.
Experience:
Typically, candidates should have at least 8 years of relevant experience in designing and evaluating public health programs, with a focus on polio eradication and infectious disease control. A minimum of 5 years of experience specifically in public health initiatives related to polio is required. Experience with large-scale public health initiatives and relevant publications or presentations is also necessary. Prior work in non-governmental organizations, government agencies, or private organizations engaged in polio eradication efforts is preferred.
Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Proficiency in additional languages relevant to the East African region may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with local partners and stakeholders.

This position is regionally based in East Africa and will work remotely to support STRIDES East Africa Polio activities, focusing on Anglophone Africa. The expected salary range for this role is USD 49,000 - 65,000 annually, which includes basic salary and allowances. The duties and responsibilities of the East Africa Regional Technical Advisor I (TAI), Polio include:
- Providing technical oversight for the implementation of polio-related activities in alignment with STRIDES’ technical approaches.
- Leading the creation and implementation of the technical portion of the STRIDES - Polio Activity plan at the regional level.
- Coordinating with technical and programmatic staff to ensure compliance with contract requirements.
- Supporting country staff to ensure technical quality and providing guidance to regional subcontractors.
- Developing strategies and tools for the design and implementation of technical components within the STRIDES – Polio and Global Health security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Security programs.
- Ensuring high-quality implementation of technical activities in line with global standards.
- Reviewing donor financial and technical reports and preparing presentations for STRIDES donors.
- Identifying training gaps and developing competency systems at the regional and country levels.
- Proactively identifying risks to technical deliverables and creating mitigation plans. 1
- Supervising junior staff and leading professional development efforts.
