Job Overview:
The consultancy position at IFPRI is focused on analyzing the National Agricultural Research Systems (NARS) in Peru, particularly in the context of agroecology. The consultant will engage in a research project aimed at understanding how NARS can facilitate technological development and support agroecological transitions. The overarching research question seeks to define what an agroecological NARS would look like and how it can be promoted across various national contexts. The consultant will be responsible for producing three analytical outputs that will contribute to both the Peru case study and a broader comparative analysis involving other countries such as Tunisia, India, and Vietnam. This role requires a deep understanding of the institutional, policy, and governance dimensions necessary for integrating agroecology into public agricultural research systems.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with producing three key deliverables: 1) A comprehensive report on mainstreaming agroecology in Peru’s NARS, which includes primary data collection, stakeholder coordination, and qualitative analysis of institutional documentation and literature. 2) An analysis of Peru’s BioTrade Strategy to identify how it can be leveraged or transformed into a national agroecology plan, involving stakeholder consultations and strategic recommendations. 3) A strategy for interregional scaling of the BioTrade Strategy, which will examine lessons from existing pilot initiatives and develop recommendations for broader application in other Amazon regions. Additionally, the consultant will coordinate project activities, conduct inception meetings, and engage in technical consultations with the CGIAR research team.
Required Qualifications:
The position requires a Master’s degree and a PhD in Agroecology or a related field, along with demonstrated expertise in agroecology, public policy analysis, and qualitative research methods. A thorough understanding of Peru’s agricultural institutional landscape is essential. The candidate should also have experience producing policy-oriented outputs for international research projects, showcasing their ability to translate research findings into actionable recommendations.
Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Master’s degree and a PhD in Agroecology or a closely related field. A background in social sciences is preferred, particularly for those with extensive research experience in food and agriculture, agroecology, and agrarian change.
Experience:
The ideal candidate should have more than five years of research experience in the fields of food and agriculture, with a specific focus on agroecology and agrarian change. A proven track record of peer-reviewed publications in the social sciences is highly desirable, indicating the candidate's ability to contribute to academic discourse and policy discussions.
Languages:
Fluency in Spanish is mandatory, as the consultancy will be conducted in Peru. Professional competency in written and spoken English is also required, enabling effective communication with international stakeholders and collaborators.
Additional Notes:
The consultancy is limited to applicants based in Peru only, and the duration of the consultancy is approximately 87 days following the receipt of a signed contract. Candidates are required to submit their CV, at least one writing sample, and a cover letter detailing their relevant experience. It is important to note that submissions will only be considered complete if all required documents, including a writing sample and daily rate in USD, are provided.
