Job Overview:
The Investment Officer position is situated within the Operations Directorate of the EIB, specifically in the Equity, Growth Capital and Project Finance Department. The role focuses on the Deep Tech & Digital Unit, which is responsible for direct investment activities aimed at enhancing Europe’s deep tech capabilities. The successful candidate will engage in the origination, assessment, and execution of investments in high-growth, technology-driven companies across various sectors such as AI, semiconductors, and quantum technologies. This position requires a strong analytical mindset, an interest in technology, and the ability to collaborate effectively with founders, investors, and internal stakeholders to develop strategic investment proposals. The role demands regular office presence at the EIB headquarters in Luxembourg and offers relocation support for candidates.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Investment Officer will lead direct equity-type financings throughout the entire investment lifecycle, which includes origination, initial screening, due diligence, structuring, approval, execution, and post-signature monitoring. Key responsibilities include:

• Originate investment opportunities by mapping the European deep tech and digital ecosystem, establishing relationships with founders, venture and growth investors, corporates, and public partners.
• Conduct thorough due diligence on companies, technologies, and markets, assessing business models, financial projections, competitive positioning, and risk-return profiles.
• Structure transactions using appropriate equity-risk instruments such as venture debt and convertibles.
• Prepare investment cases for internal approval, drafting clear and concise materials that highlight the investment thesis and key risks.
• Negotiate and execute finance documentation, ensuring that all commercial, legal, and policy considerations are addressed.
• Monitor portfolio companies post-signature, tracking milestones and financial performance, and supporting follow-on financings or restructurings as necessary.
• Contribute to internal knowledge sharing and process improvements, including investment methodologies and tools.
• Represent the EIB at relevant conferences and sector events.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree (minimum equivalent to a Bachelor) in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in venture debt, venture and growth capital, private equity, or technology investment banking is required. Familiarity with the deep tech sector and the full spectrum of equity-risk instruments is advantageous. Candidates should demonstrate fluency in financial modeling and a strong understanding of the legal aspects related to equity risk instruments. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with a good understanding of the EIB’s mission and strategic priorities.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree, preferably in Finance, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related discipline. This foundational education is crucial for understanding the complexities of investment analysis and financial structuring in the context of deep tech and digital investments.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in fields such as venture debt, venture and growth capital, private equity, or technology investment banking. Experience in a technology sector role is considered an advantage, as it provides valuable insights into the specific challenges and opportunities within the deep tech landscape.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, and proficiency in French is also required, as both are official working languages of the EIB. Knowledge of additional EU languages is considered an advantage, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders across Europe.
