Duties and Responsibilities: Interns will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including: (a) Supporting the preparation, organization, and servicing of intergovernmental meetings under the Espoo Convention and its Protocol on SEA, including the Bureau meeting and the sessions of the Meeting of the Parties. (b) Assisting in the preparation and organization of meetings for the Compliance Committees under the Aarhus Convention and its Protocol, as well as other bodies such as Task Forces and Working Groups. (c) Preparing outreach materials and drafting articles related to the Aarhus and Espoo Conventions, including content for websites and social media. (d) Updating databases related to the conventions through research and editing. (e) Carrying out desk research, meeting support, drafting reports, and assisting with day-to-day tasks required for the implementation of work programmes.
Required Qualifications: To qualify for the United Nations Internship Programme, applicants must meet specific criteria: (a) Be enrolled in or have completed a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent) or be in the final year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level). (b) Be proficient in standard software applications and content management systems (e.g., Drupal). (c) Have a strong interest in the work of the United Nations and a commitment to its ideals. (d) Demonstrate the ability to interact with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a background in law, preferably with a focus on international law, human rights, or environmental law. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the legal frameworks and policies relevant to the work of UNECE.
Experience: No prior professional work experience is required for this internship. However, candidates should demonstrate a keen interest in the United Nations and its operations, particularly in relation to environmental law and policy.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this internship, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. A working knowledge of French or Russian is considered an asset, enhancing the candidate's ability to engage in a multilingual environment.

The internship is unpaid, and interns are responsible for their own travel, visa, accommodation, and living expenses. They must also provide proof of valid medical insurance coverage and a medical certificate of good health. Interns work five days a week and are not eligible for employment in the UN Secretariat for six months following their internship. The United Nations does not charge any fees during the recruitment process.
