Job Overview:
The Research Analyst I position at IFPRI is a critical role within the Development Strategies and Governance Unit (DSG). The successful candidates will be engaged in supporting the Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Policy Support Program (PNG-AFNP) in Papua New Guinea, which is a collaborative initiative backed by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research. This role is designed for individuals who are passionate about agricultural economics and international development, and who possess strong analytical skills. The Research Analysts will be responsible for a variety of tasks that include preparing working papers and discussion papers, conducting data analysis, and assisting with field survey activities. The position requires a proactive approach to research and the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, multicultural environment. Candidates must be prepared to engage with complex datasets and contribute to the development of research instruments and analytical tools that will inform policy decisions in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Research Analyst I include, but are not limited to: assisting in the preparation of working papers and discussion papers for government and donor reports; developing data documentation manuals and learning materials; handling household survey data, including survey design, sampling, and questionnaire development; conducting field survey activities, which involve training survey enumerators and supervising field surveys; developing research instruments and analytical tools; processing and cleaning survey data; performing data analysis, including statistical and econometric analysis; conducting literature reviews and synthesizing findings; preparing large datasets for public access; responding to internal and external data requests; and undertaking other duties as assigned by supervisors. This role requires a high level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while meeting deadlines.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Agricultural Economics, International Development, or a relevant discipline, along with at least two years of relevant professional experience. Alternatively, a Master’s degree in any of the aforementioned fields is acceptable. The ideal candidate should have the ability to perform quantitative data analysis and demonstrate excellent drafting skills and an analytical mindset. A proven track record in conducting in-depth statistical analysis and reporting results is essential. Candidates should also have experience in literature reviews of academic publications and research reports. Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team-oriented, multicultural environment are crucial. The ability to multi-task, consistently meet deadlines, and manage time effectively is required, along with a professional level of attention to detail and accuracy in work. Candidates must also be able to work independently with initiative and minimal supervision, and possess the ability to travel as needed.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for the Research Analyst I position includes a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Economics, Agricultural Economics, or International Development. A Master’s degree in these areas is preferred and may substitute for the required professional experience. The educational qualifications should provide a strong foundation in economic principles, data analysis, and research methodologies relevant to agricultural and food policy.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have at least two years of relevant professional experience in research or analysis, particularly in the fields of economics, agricultural economics, or international development. Experience in quantitative data analysis and familiarity with statistical software is highly desirable. Candidates should have a demonstrated ability to conduct literature reviews and synthesize complex information effectively. Experience working in a multicultural environment and engaging with diverse stakeholders is also beneficial.

Languages:
Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory for this position, as effective communication is essential for preparing reports and engaging with stakeholders. Proficiency in Tok Pisin is preferred, as it may enhance communication with local communities and stakeholders in Papua New Guinea. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
This position is a full-time role with a one-year renewable contract based in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Candidates must have work authorization to work in Papua New Guinea. The role may involve physical demands such as sitting for extended periods and lifting light weights. The work environment requires close visual acuity for data analysis and extensive reading. The successful candidates will be expected to engage actively in fieldwork and data collection activities, which may require travel within the region.
