Job Overview:
The Associate Human Rights Officer position is a vital role within the UNMIK framework, focusing on the monitoring, reporting, and promotion of human rights in Kosovo. Under the direct supervision of the Human Rights Officer and the overall supervision of the Chief of the Human Rights Office, the incumbent will be responsible for gathering information and reporting on the human rights situation in their area of responsibility. This includes close collaboration with other United Nations entities, civil society organizations, and local communities. The role requires drafting a variety of reports, briefings, and documents related to human rights, assisting in research and coordination for reports to European and international human rights mechanisms, and contributing to identifying human rights issues through thorough research and analysis. The Associate Human Rights Officer will also participate in discussions with other human rights officers to integrate human rights considerations into broader political, humanitarian, and economic efforts, ensuring that a gender perspective is included in all activities. This position is crucial for developing initiatives that strengthen responses to both immediate and long-term human rights challenges in Kosovo.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Human Rights Officer include:
  • Gathering and analyzing information on the human rights situation in the designated area, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Drafting reports, briefings, and other documents related to human rights issues for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Assisting the Chief of the Human Rights Office and Human Rights Officers in researching and preparing reports for European and international human rights mechanisms.
  • Identifying human rights issues through research and analysis, and preparing timely reports on findings.
  • Establishing and maintaining contacts with local authorities, international organizations, and civil society to facilitate collaboration and information sharing.
  • Participating in discussions with other human rights officers to integrate human rights issues into political, humanitarian, and economic programs.
  • Contributing to the development of initiatives aimed at addressing immediate and long-term human rights problems.
  • Integrating a gender perspective into all activities and ensuring that gender considerations are reflected in reports and initiatives.
  • Assisting in project implementation as required, ensuring that projects align with UNMIK's objectives. 1

Required Qualifications:

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for this position, as it is the working language of the United Nations. Additional Notes:
The position is based in Kosovo, specifically in Mitrovica, and may involve working in a challenging environment with varying living conditions. The role is full-time, and candidates should be prepared for potential travel within the region as required. The UNV Field Unit will assist new arrivals in finding suitable housing, and while initial accommodation may be provided in a hotel, permanent housing will need to be secured. The living conditions in Kosovo include access to basic amenities, although there may be variations based on location. The UN provides contracted medical services to its staff, ensuring health support is available.
