Job Overview:
The Researcher position within the Asia Division of Human Rights Watch is a critical role aimed at investigating, analyzing, and advocating against human rights abuses in China. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring the human rights situation in the country, utilizing a variety of sources such as government reports, media, and testimonies from victims and witnesses. This role requires a proactive approach to public advocacy, including writing reports and engaging with media and public debates. The Researcher will also collaborate with local NGOs and human rights organizations to ensure that HRW's efforts complement their work while maintaining their security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security. Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties and responsibilities of the Researcher include: researching, monitoring, and documenting human rights conditions in China; collecting and analyzing information from diverse sources; writing and publicizing reports, briefing papers, and submissions to international bodies; assisting in the development of strategies to change abusive laws and practices; responding to media inquiries and projecting human rights concerns in public debates; supporting fundraising efforts; liaising with HRW staff globally; traveling internationally as required; and delivering outputs in a timely manner consistent with the Asia Division's priorities. The Researcher will also be expected to perform other tasks as needed, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced (graduate) degree or equivalent experience in fields such as international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences. A minimum of five years of professional-level experience working on issues related to China is required, with a preference for candidates who have experience in China's civil society, media, and government policies. Strong analytical and communication skills are essential, along with the ability to conduct interviews safely and effectively. Knowledge of international human rights law and experience in human rights advocacy are also required. Candidates should demonstrate initiative, creativity, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Educational Background:
The position requires an advanced (graduate) degree or equivalent experience in relevant fields such as international relations, journalism, law, or social sciences. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of human rights issues and for conducting thorough research and analysis.

Experience:
A minimum of five years of professional-level experience working on China is essential for this role. Languages:

This is a full-time position, and while it is preferred that the candidate be based within commuting distance of one of HRW's offices, multiple locations in the Asia region may be considered.
