Job Overview:
The National Development Economist will play a crucial role in coordinating support for the implementation of the SDGs in Botswana. This position involves engaging in policy dialogue with government officials, assisting in program development, and conducting research and analysis. The economist will work under the supervision of the Resident Representative, advising senior management on inclusive growth policies and SDG integration. The role requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including government counterparts and private sector partners, to enhance the impact of UNDP projects and programs. The economist will also represent UNDP in their area of expertise and may supervise consultants, maintaining a network with colleagues from the UNDP global and regional network, UN agencies, and civil society.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The National Development Economist will be responsible for providing strategic advice on economic and development issues, producing analysis notes on the socio-economic situation, and supporting the formulation and implementation of the Sustainable Inclusive Economic Transformation Program. The economist will contribute to the development of strategic documents, advise on program adjustments to align with national policies, and support the production of economic reports. Additionally, the economist will participate in regional initiatives, represent UNDP in working groups, and support the establishment of a modern data information system for socioeconomic indicators. The role also includes providing technical support to the government, participating in evaluations of macroeconomic policies, and facilitating capacity building for government representatives and UNDP staff.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree in economics, social policy, public policy, sustainable development, public finance, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with additional qualifying experience will be considered. A minimum of 7 years of relevant work experience at the national or international level in economics, social policy, sustainable development, public finance, or data analysis is required. Candidates should have a strong track record in multi-stakeholder partnership building, economic policy advocacy, and practical skills in statistical and econometric software for economic modeling and presentations.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (master's degree or equivalent) in economics, social policy, public policy, sustainable development, public finance, or development studies is required. A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in the above fields, combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience, will also be considered.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of progressively responsible relevant experience at the national or international level in economics and social policy, sustainable development, public finance, and/or data analysis. Experience in multi-stakeholder partnership building and dealing with both public and private sectors is essential, along with a proven track record in resource mobilization and partnership engagement.

Languages:
Fluency in English is required for this position. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not mandatory.
