Job Overview: The position of Electrical Technician within the Cabling Section at CERN is crucial for the expansion, strengthening, and maintenance of control and power cable installations. This role supports essential systems within CERN's accelerators, including alarm systems, process control systems, beam instrumentation, and magnet powering systems. The technician will be responsible for analyzing cable installation requests, conducting necessary studies, creating bills of quantities and budgets, organizing cabling campaigns, and ensuring the preparation of detailed work documentation. Additionally, the technician will carry out risk assessments, manage logistics for cabling activities, and monitor the progress and quality of work, ensuring compliance with CERN standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Analyze cable installation requests and liaise with requesters to gather necessary information.
Conduct studies to define cable types, connectors assembly, wire conventions, routing, and mechanical supports in collaboration with users.
Create detailed bills of quantities and budgets for cabling projects.
Organize cabling and de-cabling campaigns, coordinating with internal and external stakeholders, including contractors and transport services.
Prepare detailed work documentation, including drawings, cable lists, and test procedures.
Carry out risk assessments for cabling work, identifying hazards and defining mitigation measures.
Manage logistics for cabling activities, including material delivery and site access.
Organize and lead worksite meetings to monitor progress and safety.
Perform inspections, testing, and acceptance of completed cabling work.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Industrial Electrical Installation or a related field. Demonstrated experience in planning, preparing, and overseeing industrial electrical cabling activities is essential, including familiarity with lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures. Strong experience with control and power cables and their connectors is required, along with experience in verifying technical quality and compliance of cabling installations with applicable standards. Technical supervision experience of contractors is also necessary.
Educational Background: A technical certificate or general secondary education in a relevant field is required. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience in industrial electrical installation will also be considered. The educational background should ideally include knowledge of electrical engineering principles and practices, particularly in relation to cabling systems.
Experience: Candidates should have substantial experience in planning and overseeing industrial electrical cabling activities. This includes practical experience with control and power cables, as well as technical supervision of contractors. Experience in implementing safety procedures and ensuring compliance with industry standards is also crucial.
Languages: Proficiency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language. This bilingual requirement is essential for effective communication within the diverse environment at CERN.
Additional Notes: The position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a commitment to a 40-hour work week, with hybrid job flexibility. Candidates should be prepared for work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and may be required to work shifts, stand-by duty, and during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed.
