Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, with its member states primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology. CERN's mission is to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, and it fosters an environment of innovation and collaboration among a diverse range of professionals.
Job Overview: In this role, you will join the Accelerators Systems Department (SY) and work within the Radio Frequency (RF) Group, which is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and development of RF power amplifiers and accelerating cavities. As part of an ongoing consolidation of the RF systems of the CERN Proton Synchrotron (PS), the existing vacuum tube-based driver amplifiers are planned to be replaced by new solid-state RF amplifiers. You will contribute to the development of FPGA firmware for amplifier interlock systems and for rapid fault-detection and protection systems used across the RF systems of the PS Complex. The role also includes supporting the integration and testing of new systems and developing Python tools for automated measurements and hardware validation. The work will involve both laboratory testing and commissioning activities on RF equipment, ensuring that the systems operate efficiently and safely while meeting the high standards expected at CERN.
Duties and Responsibilities: Your responsibilities will include developing FPGA firmware for an interlock and protection system as part of a new solid-state RF amplifier design. You will support the integration, commissioning, and validation of the new interlock system within the PS RF infrastructure. Additionally, you will develop Python-based tools for automated hardware testing, measurements, and data analysis. You will also be tasked with developing FPGA firmware for rapid fault-detection and protection systems for RF systems across the PS Complex, ensuring that all systems are reliable and effective in their operation.
Required Qualifications: To be eligible for this position, you must have initial experience in FPGA design and firmware development, preferably using VHDL. Familiarity with FPGA development environments and verification/debugging tools is essential. Basic programming experience in Python or a similar language for test automation and data analysis is also required. Desired experience includes PCB design and electronic circuit development, which will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to the team.
Educational Background: Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field. It is important to note that applicants without a university degree are not eligible for this position, and those with a PhD are also not eligible. By the application deadline, candidates should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation.
Experience: The position requires a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should ideally be in areas related to FPGA design, firmware development, and programming, which will prepare you for the challenges of this role.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the working language at CERN. Additionally, there is a commitment to learn French, which is considered beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: The job closing date is set for 01.07.2026 at 23:59 CEST. The contract duration is for 24 months, with a possible extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week and is fully onsite. The role may involve work in radiation areas, interventions in underground installations, and stand-by duty as required by the needs of the organization. The job reference is SY-RF-LIS-2026-164-GRAE, and it falls under the field of Electrical or Electronics Engineering. The benchmark job is 200050 - Electronics Engineer. Global benefits include a monthly stipend between 5266-5793 Swiss Francs (tax-free) depending on your degree, 30 days of paid leave per year plus 2 weeks of annual closure, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, a relocation package, and opportunities for on-the-job and formal training, including language classes.
