Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics and technology, employing over 2,500 staff members and hosting thousands of scientists from around the world. CERN operates in multiple countries, primarily in Europe, and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.

Job Overview:
The Mechanical Engineer position within the CERN ATLAS Team is pivotal in the construction of the future silicon ATLAS Inner Tracker (ITk). The role involves significant contributions to the development of the Pixel Outer Barrel, focusing on the design, prototyping, assembly, and integration of detector components. The engineer will be responsible for implementing quality assurance procedures and conducting tests to ensure the performance of final assemblies. This position requires a hands-on approach to the assembly and quality control of detector components, as well as the engineering of precision tooling necessary for the assembly and installation of these components. The successful candidate will engage in various stages of the project, from conception to installation, ensuring that all processes meet the required standards and specifications.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Mechanical Engineer include participating in the conception, detailed design, production, testing, and installation of detector components and assembly tooling for the ITk Pixel Outer Barrel. The engineer will develop, document, and implement procedures for the assembly, testing, installation, and repair of detector components and sub-assemblies. Responsibilities also include managing the procurement of materials and tooling, contributing to the production and quality control of detector components, and ensuring compliance with relevant ISO standards. The role demands a proactive approach to problem-solving and collaboration with team members to achieve project goals effectively.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess familiarity with the design of precision mechanical components and systems. Initial experience in CAD software for 3D modeling, particularly CATIA V5, is essential, along with the ability to produce 2D technical drawings in accordance with ISO standards. Hands-on experience in assembly and testing of prototypes is required, and knowledge of LabVIEW, temperature forcing systems, and two-phase cooling systems will be considered advantageous. A rigorous and organized work ethic, along with a 'can-do' attitude, is crucial for success in this role.

Educational Background:
The position requires a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or a related field. Candidates must have graduated within the last two years and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract. Applicants without a university degree or those holding a PhD are not eligible for this position.

Experience:
The ideal candidate should have a maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation. This experience should be relevant to mechanical engineering, particularly in areas related to the design and testing of mechanical systems and components.

Languages:
Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, and candidates should demonstrate a commitment to learning French. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset but is not required.

Additional Notes:
The contract duration for this position is 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. The role is fully onsite, and candidates must be prepared to work in radiation areas and underground installations. A valid driving license is required, and the position may involve work during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as needed. The job reference is EP-ATL-TRK-2026-157-GRAE, and the target start date is August 1, 202
  • Compensation includes a monthly stipend between 5266-5793 Swiss Francs (tax-free), 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
