Job Overview: The Assistant Technical Officer, Nutrition - CMAM is responsible for the treatment of severe acute malnutrition (SAM) both with and without complications. This role involves providing nutrition rehabilitation for admitted SAM cases and preventing further deterioration through the provision of therapeutic feeds and routine specialized medicines. The officer will oversee health and nutrition counseling and the capacity building of CMAM assistants. The position requires active engagement in community outreach activities, including screening for malnutrition in children under five, and providing outpatient therapeutic program (OTP) services in target communities and IDP camps. The officer will also be responsible for ensuring the timely identification of complications and facilitating referrals to stabilization centers based on established criteria. This role is critical in addressing the malnutrition crisis in the region and requires a proactive approach to community health and nutrition management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Assistant Technical Officer include leading community outreach activities, conducting mid-upper arm circumference screenings, and actively finding cases of malnutrition in children under five. The officer will provide OTP services in target communities and IDP camps, conduct defaulter tracing, and deliver key messages at OTP sites. They will oversee the identification of complications and non-responders, ensuring timely referrals to stabilization centers. The officer will develop a Community Management of Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) work plan, produce trends of malnutrition based on admissions, and carry out mortality audits at the OTP. They will support the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) unit during assessments and focus group discussions, ensuring appropriate documentation of services and monitoring OTP performance and output indicators. The officer will manage SAM children with complications at the Stabilization Centre, ensuring correct clinical diagnoses and comprehensive health checks. They will also be responsible for inventory management of nutrition supplies, preparation of therapeutic milk and food for admitted SAM children, and providing key health and education messages to beneficiaries. Additionally, the officer will compile statistical data on admissions, defaults, cures, and deaths, and draft reports on activities. Other duties may be assigned as necessary.
Required Qualifications: The position requires a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) in Nursing with 1-3 years of experience, or a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) with at least 1 year of experience. Experience working with a humanitarian organization is desirable. Candidates should possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to prepare weekly and monthly program reports. Flexibility and adaptability in implementing daily work tasks are essential, as well as a willingness to work in challenging conditions.
Educational Background: Candidates must have a B.Sc in Nursing or an MBBS degree. The educational background should include relevant training in nutrition and public health, with a focus on community health initiatives and humanitarian response.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have 1-3 years of relevant experience in nursing or medical practice, particularly in a humanitarian context. Experience in managing malnutrition cases and working with vulnerable populations is highly valued. Previous experience in clinical settings is an asset, and familiarity with community health programs is beneficial.
Languages: Excellent spoken and written proficiency in English is mandatory. Knowledge of local languages is highly desirable, as it facilitates communication with beneficiaries and enhances the effectiveness of outreach activities.
Additional Notes: This position is based in Mafa, Borno State, Nigeria, and may require the candidate to stay at the local government area (LGA). The role is full-time and involves working in challenging conditions, including long distances to stabilization centers. The expected hiring salary range for this role is between USD 7,850 and 10,000 annually, which includes gross salary and allowances.
