Job Overview:
The Economist position at the IMF Resident Representative Office for Jordan is a critical role that involves systematic monitoring, assessment, and evaluation of economic and political developments in Jordan. The selected candidate will be expected to analyze various economic indicators, including production, prices, financial sector dynamics, fiscal issues, and balance of payments. The Economist will also be responsible for maintaining databases, providing accurate information regarding Jordan's macroeconomic performance, and contributing to institutional capacity building. This role requires collaboration with national technical staff, donor institutions, and other organizations to ensure effective communication and data exchange. The position is expected to start on August 1, 2026, and is offered as a one-year local contractual appointment, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and organizational needs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Economist will undertake a variety of duties and responsibilities, including:
  • Systematic monitoring and evaluation of economic and political developments in Jordan.
  • Identifying key issues for discussion and providing IMF staff with accurate information regarding macroeconomic performance.
  • Developing and maintaining comprehensive databases related to economic indicators.
  • Collecting and analyzing data to prepare written reports and statistical outputs.
  • Contributing to institutional capacity building and monitoring technical assistance provided by the IMF.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective relationships with national technical staff and other stakeholders.
  • Assisting visiting mission staff in data collection and analysis.
  • Preparing program and background notes for visiting missions.
  • Participating in missions to collect and analyze data and exchange information with government and private sector officials. 1
  • Coordinating with the IMF communications department to develop and implement outreach strategies. 1
  • Performing other duties as required to ensure the smooth functioning of the office.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a strong academic background with an MA or Ph.D. in macroeconomics, financial economics, or related fields such as international economics, monetary economics, public finance, econometrics, labor economics, political economy, or international trade and finance. Additionally, candidates should have five or more years of relevant work experience in areas such as econometrics, statistics, or finance. Proficiency in software applications, particularly Excel and econometrics packages like R, Stata, Matlab, Python, Julia, EViews, SAS, and RATS, is essential. Strong analytical and quantitative skills, excellent spreadsheet and data analysis capabilities, and the ability to work independently under supervision are also required. Candidates should demonstrate a collaborative attitude with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both English and Arabic.

Educational Background:
The position requires a graduate-level education, specifically an MA or Ph.D. in macroeconomics, financial economics, or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent combinations of education and experience may also be considered. The educational background should provide a solid foundation in economic theory, quantitative analysis, and relevant statistical techniques.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of five years of relevant work experience in fields such as econometrics, statistics, or finance. This experience should demonstrate the ability to analyze complex economic data and contribute to policy discussions. Experience working in international organizations or with government agencies is highly desirable, as it provides valuable insights into the economic landscape and policy-making processes.

Languages:
Proficiency in both English and Arabic is mandatory for this position, as effective communication in both languages is essential for interacting with various stakeholders. Additional language skills may be considered an asset but are not required.

Additional Notes:
The position is a one-year local contractual appointment with the possibility of renewal for up to three years, contingent on continued need and satisfactory performance. Candidates must be nationals of Jordan or able to obtain a valid work permit independently, as the IMF will not sponsor work permits.
