Job Overview: The Consultant for Crisis Analysis will play a crucial role in supporting Mercy Corps' programming in complex humanitarian contexts. This position involves managing and overseeing a study that examines the relationship between livelihood opportunities and durable solutions for Syrian refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs). The consultant will be responsible for leading qualitative research methodologies, developing an inception report, conducting key informant interviews, and producing analytical reports that provide actionable recommendations for practitioners in the field. The role requires a deep understanding of the socio-economic conditions affecting Syrian refugees and the ability to translate research findings into practical strategies for improving livelihoods and facilitating return preparedness.
Duties and Responsibilities: The consultant will be tasked with several key responsibilities, including:
Providing overall project management and technical oversight for the study, ensuring compliance with Mercy Corps’ research standards and timelines.
Leading the qualitative research methodology and design, including the development of the inception report.
Conducting key informant interviews with stakeholders to gather qualitative data.
Analyzing research findings in collaboration with the Crisis Analysis regional team.
Producing transcripts of interviews and ensuring they are anonymized and coded appropriately.
Leading the production of a thematic report that synthesizes findings and recommendations.
Presenting initial findings to internal stakeholders and facilitating feedback for revisions.
Engaging in external events to disseminate findings and contribute to discussions on the topic.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a strong background in research methodologies, particularly qualitative research, and have experience in project management within humanitarian or development contexts. They should demonstrate excellent analytical skills, the ability to synthesize complex information, and strong communication skills for both written and verbal presentations. Familiarity with the socio-economic conditions affecting Syrian refugees and IDPs is essential, as is the ability to engage with diverse stakeholders effectively.
Educational Background: A graduate degree in social sciences, international development, public policy, or a related field is required. Candidates with advanced degrees or specialized training in research methodologies will be preferred. A strong academic background that includes coursework or research related to humanitarian issues, refugee studies, or economic development will be advantageous.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in research, project management, or consultancy within humanitarian or development sectors. Experience working with refugees or in conflict-affected areas is highly desirable. Candidates should have a proven track record of conducting qualitative research and producing high-quality analytical reports that inform policy and practice.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, with proficiency in Arabic being highly desirable. Knowledge of additional languages relevant to the region may be considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: The consultancy is expected to last approximately 12–14 weeks, structured into phases including inception, data collection, analysis, and finalization. The consultant will be compensated based on their level of experience and expertise, with the expectation of up to 25 working days required for the project.
