Job Overview:
The position of United Nations Volunteer (UNV) for Food Security and Livelihoods is crucial in supporting FAO's mission in Uganda, particularly in addressing the needs of displaced populations and their host communities. The UNV will work under the guidance of the Food Security and Livelihoods Coordinator to conduct comprehensive analyses of the needs of refugees and host communities, focusing on enhancing self-reliance and economic empowerment. This role involves collaboration with various stakeholders, including UN agencies, NGOs, and government bodies, to ensure that FAO's refugee response aligns with national frameworks and international commitments. The UNV will also contribute to the development of innovative solutions, such as the block farming model, to improve food security and livelihoods in the region.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The UNV will be responsible for a range of tasks aimed at improving the livelihoods of refugees and host communities. Key responsibilities include conducting needs assessments and evaluations to identify the specific challenges faced by these populations, particularly in relation to block farming and income generation. The UNV will support the ongoing development of FAO's block farming model, which aims to enhance land access and resource equity. Additionally, the UNV will track development financing and assist in the preparation of project proposals for funding opportunities, such as the Japan Supplementary Budget. Engaging in advocacy and partnership-building with bilateral donors, NGOs, and private sector entities will also be a significant part of the role, ensuring effective project implementation and progress assessment.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should possess strong analytical skills and the ability to conduct thorough assessments of community needs. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration with diverse stakeholders. The ideal candidate should demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environment, as well as a commitment to the values of accountability, professionalism, and teamwork. Experience in project management and familiarity with food security and livelihood programs will be advantageous.

Educational Background:
A degree in a relevant field such as agriculture, social sciences, international development, or a related discipline is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in food security, livelihoods, or refugee studies will be considered an asset. Candidates should also have a strong understanding of the socio-economic context of Uganda and the challenges faced by refugees and host communities.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience in humanitarian or development work, particularly in areas related to food security, livelihoods, or refugee assistance. Experience working with international organizations, NGOs, or government agencies in Uganda or similar contexts will be highly valued. Proven ability to engage with multiple stakeholders and coordinate efforts across different sectors is essential.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of FAO and the UN. Knowledge of local languages spoken in Uganda, such as Luganda or Swahili, would be considered an asset, as it can facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders.

This position is a full-time role as a United Nations Volunteer, and the duration of the contract will be specified upon selection.
