Job Overview: The Advocacy & Public Engagement Intern will play a crucial role in supporting Save the Children Canada's Policy, Advocacy, and Government Relations team. This position involves providing administrative and operational support, monitoring political and policy developments relevant to the organization's mission, and facilitating effective collaboration across teams and with external partners. The intern will be responsible for conducting policy analysis, developing advocacy tools and materials, and assisting in the planning and organization of events and meetings. This role is essential for ensuring that advocacy efforts are well-coordinated and impactful, contributing to the overall mission of Save the Children.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern's responsibilities will include conducting thorough policy analysis on Canadian Government positions related to Save the Children's work, tracking relevant developments and trends through monitoring news, Parliamentary proceedings, and reports. They will assist in developing advocacy tools and materials, such as literature reviews, power mapping, policy briefs, and other research-based documents to support policy initiatives. Additionally, the intern will support the planning and organization of roundtables, events, and external meetings, including outreach and event logistics. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks effectively while ensuring that all advocacy efforts align with the organization's goals.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria set by the Government of Canada’s Canada Summer Job Program. To qualify, applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the beginning of the employment period, be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or individuals granted refugee protection under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. They must also possess a valid Social Insurance Number and be legally entitled to work in Canada. Furthermore, applicants should be post-secondary students returning to school in the Fall. Note that international students are not eligible for this position, as the program aims to support youth entering the Canadian labor market.
Educational Background: The ideal candidate will be pursuing a degree in Political Sciences, International Development, Global Affairs, or a related field. A solid understanding of the Canadian federal political system and knowledge of child rights, humanitarian principles, and the development and humanitarian sector is essential for success in this role. This educational background will provide the necessary foundation for conducting policy analysis and engaging in advocacy efforts effectively.
Experience: Candidates should have demonstrated project management experience, which will support the execution of assigned objectives. The ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines is crucial, as the intern will be expected to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while achieving the objectives set by Save the Children Canada. Experience in research, writing, and analytical skills will be beneficial for synthesizing complex data into clear insights for diverse audiences.
Languages: While proficiency in English is mandatory, knowledge of additional languages may be considered an asset. Strong communication skills are essential for building relationships across diverse cultural and organizational settings, both internally and externally.
