Job Overview: The Communication Officer (REACH Africa) will play a crucial role in supporting the planning and implementation of the REACH Africa initiative, which focuses on enhancing community preparedness and engagement within emergency preparedness systems. This position is integral to the WHO AFRO Health Emergencies Programme, particularly under the Health Emergency Preparedness and Threat Management (HEPTM) Unit. The officer will work closely with the RCCE team, the Pandemic Fund Delivery Unit (PDU), and relevant technical counterparts to ensure that community protection and resilience components are effectively integrated into Pandemic Fund-supported efforts. The role involves contextualizing WHO guidance and frameworks related to community engagement, planning and organizing various REACH Africa activities, and documenting project implementation. The Communication Officer will also draft technical inputs and facilitate coordination with WHO Country Offices and technical teams to ensure coherent implementation of REACH Africa activities.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communication Officer will be responsible for a variety of tasks, including:
Supporting Member States in integrating community engagement into national emergency preparedness efforts, particularly within Pandemic Fund-supported projects.
Contextualizing and applying WHO guidance and tools related to community protection and resilience in line with REACH Africa objectives.
Planning and organizing REACH Africa activities, including pulse sessions, podcast series, community dialogues, and learning sessions.
Documenting project implementation by collecting and synthesizing inputs, lessons learned, and examples of good practices from pilot countries.
Drafting routine technical inputs, summaries, and donor-related updates relevant to REACH Africa implementation.
Facilitating coordination with WHO Country Offices and technical teams to support coherent implementation of REACH Africa activities.
Monitoring project progress through regular communication with participating countries and reviewing activity updates.
Contributing to the development of project materials that support visibility and knowledge sharing.
Supporting coordination between the PDU, Member States, and partners during Pandemic Fund discussions related to REACH Africa. 1
Performing other related duties as assigned by supervisors.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, adaptability, and flexibility. They should demonstrate strong interpersonal and networking abilities, creativity, sound judgment, and decision-making skills. Professionalism and self-management are also essential qualities for this role. The ideal candidate should be able to work collaboratively with diverse teams and stakeholders, demonstrating a commitment to the values of WHO and the principles of public health.
Educational Background: A relevant degree in communication, public health, social sciences, or a related field is required. Advanced degrees or specialized training in health communication or emergency management would be an asset. Candidates should have a solid understanding of public health principles and practices, particularly in the context of emergency preparedness and response.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in communication, public health, or a related field. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in health emergency preparedness and response, is highly desirable. Familiarity with community engagement strategies and practices, as well as experience in project management, will be advantageous.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory, both written and spoken. Knowledge of French or other languages spoken in the African region would be considered an asset, as it would enhance communication with diverse stakeholders and communities.
Additional Notes: The position is based in Nairobi, Kenya, and may require travel within the region to support implementation activities. The role is full-time and may involve working with international partners and stakeholders.
