Job Overview:
The Family Support Specialist position is a permanent part-time role (.9 FTE at 9 days per fortnight, 7.6 hours Monday to Friday during normal business hours) based in Toowoomba. The primary function of this role is to provide immediate support to women and children impacted by domestic and family violence. The specialist will conduct risk assessments, develop strong networks and referral pathways, and collect and record information for accountability, evaluation, and reporting purposes. The position emphasizes a trauma-informed practice framework and requires a deep understanding of the impact of domestic violence on families and communities. The role is designed for individuals who are passionate about making a positive change in the community and who can work collaboratively within a dynamic team environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provide immediate support to women and children affected by domestic and family violence.
  • Conduct thorough risk assessments when domestic and family violence is identified.
  • Develop and maintain strong networks and referral pathways to support desired outcomes for clients.
  • Collect and accurately record information for accountability, evaluation, and reporting purposes.
  • Apply trauma-informed practices in all interactions with clients.
  • Collaborate with team members and other stakeholders to enhance service delivery.
  • Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay updated on best practices in the field.
  • Advocate for the rights and needs of children and families impacted by domestic violence.
  • Engage in community outreach and education initiatives to raise awareness about domestic and family violence.

Required Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor of Social Work, Psychology, or a relevant Human Services Qualification.
  • Significant experience working in a similar service, particularly with women, children, and young people who have experienced domestic and family violence.
  • Knowledge of best practices, professional standards, and relevant research in the field of domestic and family violence.
  • Demonstrated understanding of how cultural contexts influence practice approaches.
  • A current valid driver’s license is required for this position.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, or a relevant qualification in Human Services. This educational background is essential to ensure that the specialist has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively support clients impacted by domestic and family violence.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have significant experience working with women, children, and young people who have experienced domestic and family violence. This experience should include a thorough understanding of the complexities surrounding domestic violence and the ability to apply trauma-informed practices in a supportive manner. Previous roles in similar service environments will be highly regarded.

Languages:
