Job Overview:
The Agro-Economist position is crucial for providing strategic and technical advisory support to the Agriculture Delivery Unit under the Sindh Water & Agriculture Transformation (SWAT) program. The role focuses on advancing sustainable, competitive, and climate-resilient agricultural development. The Agro-Economist will work on strengthening agricultural production systems, crop protection, and climate-smart agriculture through policy advice, digitalization, technological innovation, and improved farm input and mechanization systems. The position emphasizes enhancing productivity, diversification, and market orientation for small- and medium-scale farmers, including women farmers. The incumbent will collaborate with various stakeholders, develop crop sector strategies, and provide technical backstopping for capacity development and knowledge-sharing initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods, nutrition, and incomes in both rural and urban contexts within the SWAT project framework.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Agro-Economist will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including advising the Agriculture Delivery Unit (ADU) on developing agricultural production and crop protection initiatives that promote efficient, competitive, sustainable, climate-resilient, and socially inclusive agriculture development, particularly for small- and medium-scale farmers. The incumbent will support the SWAT team in implementing agricultural digitalization and technological innovations to enhance sustainable crop production, crop diversification, and climate-smart agriculture, ultimately improving nutrition, livelihoods, and incomes in rural and urban areas. Additionally, the Agro-Economist will promote Climate Smart/Resilient Agriculture through innovation and technology, develop multi-sectoral and stakeholder collaborations, and ensure the quality and effectiveness of capacity development and knowledge-sharing activities. This includes preparing learning materials and online tools, acting as a knowledge resource for developing crop sector strategies for targeted communities, and supporting improvements in agricultural productivity through appropriate mechanization systems and improved technologies.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced degree (Master’s or Ph.D.) in Agriculture Economy, Statistics, Climate Smart Agriculture, Agronomy, or a related discipline. A minimum of 10 years of international experience in sustainable agriculture, climate-smart practices, and adaptation strategies is required, preferably in large-scale development projects. Candidates should also have a working knowledge of English, Urdu, and Sindhi, and must be nationals of Pakistan.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes an advanced degree, either a Master's or a Ph.D., in relevant fields such as Agriculture Economy, Statistics, Climate Smart Agriculture, Agronomy, or other related disciplines. This advanced education is essential to ensure that the candidate has the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills to effectively contribute to the objectives of the FAO and the SWAT program.

Experience:
The position requires at least 10 years of international experience in sustainable agriculture, climate-smart practices, and adaptation strategies. This experience should preferably be in the context of large-scale development projects, indicating that the candidate has a robust understanding of the complexities and challenges involved in implementing agricultural initiatives on a significant scale.

Languages:
Candidates must have a working knowledge of English, which is essential for communication within the international context of FAO. Additionally, proficiency in Urdu and Sindhi is required, as these languages are crucial for effective communication with local stakeholders and communities involved in the SWAT project.
