Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, was established in 1954 and is one of the world's largest and most respected centres for scientific research. With a mission to uncover the fundamental structure of the universe, CERN employs thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff from over 100 countries. The organization operates the world's largest particle physics laboratory, located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking discoveries in particle physics, including the Higgs boson. CERN's collaborative environment fosters innovation and diversity, making it a hub for scientific advancement and exploration.
Job Overview: As a Polymers and Composites Technician at CERN, you will play a crucial role in the Polymer Laboratory within the Superconducting Magnet Technology (SMT) Section. This position involves hands-on manufacturing of superconducting coils and other essential components that are integral to the CERN accelerator complex. You will apply advanced composite techniques such as vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM), bonding, and prepreg processing. Your contributions will not only support the production of critical components but also involve the development and optimization of innovative materials and fabrication methods, enhancing performance and reliability in cutting-edge scientific applications. This role is pivotal in ensuring that CERN continues to push the boundaries of knowledge in particle physics and material science.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary duties and responsibilities of the Polymers and Composites Technician include:
Manufacturing key components for the CERN accelerator complex and experiments, ensuring high standards of quality and traceability in production processes.
Participating in the construction of superconducting magnets, including the operation and maintenance of polymer processing equipment such as VARTM systems.
Supporting the development, characterization, and testing of polymer materials and composite solutions for various applications, including the fabrication of mock-ups and prototypes.
Preparing and maintaining manufacturing procedures and work instructions.
Handling the procurement of materials and tooling for the Polymer Laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety and quality requirements.
Conducting troubleshooting and repair of complex systems on-site as needed.
Collaborating with team members to develop and adapt manufacturing techniques and tooling for first-of-a-kind applications.
Producing and updating technical documentation related to manufacturing processes and equipment.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a technical certificate or general secondary education, or equivalent relevant experience in Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Additionally, hands-on experience in polymers and composites processing, including bonding and gluing techniques, is essential. Familiarity with the operation and maintenance of electromechanical equipment used in resin transfer processes is required. The ability to develop and adapt manufacturing techniques, tooling, and mock-ups is crucial, along with experience in producing and updating technical documentation. Skills in the construction and assembly of mechanical and hydraulic systems, proficiency with mechanical workshop tools, and conventional machining techniques are considered assets. Experience in procurement follow-up and inventory management is also beneficial.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a technical certificate or general secondary education in Material Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field. Candidates with equivalent relevant experience will also be considered. A strong foundation in material science and engineering principles is essential for success in this role.
Experience: The position requires hands-on experience in the processing of polymers and composites, particularly in bonding and gluing techniques. Candidates should have experience operating and maintaining electromechanical equipment used in resin transfer or similar processes. The ability to develop and adapt manufacturing techniques and tooling for innovative applications is necessary. Experience in producing and updating technical documentation is also required, along with familiarity in the construction and assembly of mechanical and hydraulic systems, which will be considered an asset.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English or French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn the other language being highly valued. Proficiency in both languages will enhance communication and collaboration within the diverse CERN community.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a valid driving license and may involve working during nights, Sundays, and official holidays as required by the needs of the organization. Shift work and stand-by duty may also be necessary. Candidates must obtain medical clearance due to occupational health risks associated with the position. The job grade is classified as 3-4, and the working hours are set at 40 hours per week. CERN offers a competitive salary that is tax-free, along with 30 days of paid leave per year, comprehensive health insurance coverage, family allowances, and a relocation package depending on individual circumstances.
