Job Overview: The Communications Associate position is integral to the Communications and External Relations Unit at UNHCR's Representation for the Nordic and Baltic Countries. The role involves supporting the implementation of communications strategies that align with UNHCR's global, regional, and country-level objectives. The incumbent will work closely with the Communication Officer and other team members to develop and execute communications activities that enhance UNHCR's visibility and engagement with diverse audiences. This includes creating compelling narratives, managing media relations, and producing multimedia content that resonates with the public and stakeholders. The Communications Associate will also be responsible for monitoring trends and news to effectively position UNHCR's messaging within ongoing conversations, thereby generating empathy and mobilizing action for forcibly displaced individuals. The position requires a proactive approach to communications, ensuring that all content produced is impactful and reaches the intended audiences through appropriate channels.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Communications Associate will be tasked with a variety of duties, including but not limited to: supporting the implementation of communications strategies for specific countries and projects; identifying thematic priorities and target audiences; monitoring news and trends to integrate UNHCR's messaging; forging strategic partnerships to enhance content production and promotion; developing authoritative content such as press releases, reports, and multimedia storytelling; ensuring maximum visibility for created content; assisting in the research and production of media materials; maintaining and upgrading communications skills; supporting the execution of campaigns and events; managing risks and opportunities; and performing other related duties as required. The role demands a high level of creativity, strategic thinking, and the ability to work independently while maintaining effective communication with various stakeholders.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a minimum of three years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or two years of relevant work experience with a Bachelor's degree or higher. Essential qualifications include excellent computer skills, proficiency in MS Office applications, and strong drafting abilities. Desirable qualifications include experience in implementing communications strategies, professional writing and editing skills, and experience in advocacy campaigns. Functional skills required for the position include international media contacts, journalism, video production for digital platforms, editing, drafting, and digital content production.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in political science, international relations, development studies, migration studies, communications, media studies, journalism, or a related field. This educational foundation is essential for understanding the complexities of forced displacement and the communications strategies necessary to address these issues effectively.
Experience: The level of experience needed for this position is at least three years of relevant experience for candidates with a High School Diploma, or two years for those with a Bachelor's degree or higher. This experience should ideally encompass various aspects of communications, including media relations, content creation, and strategic communications planning. Candidates should demonstrate a proven track record of working in fast-paced environments and managing multiple priorities effectively.
Languages: Fluency in written and spoken English is mandatory, along with knowledge of at least one Nordic language (Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, or Swedish). For General Service jobs, knowledge of English and/or the UN working language of the duty station is required. The expected overall ability in the required languages should be at least at the B2 level.
