The internship is designed to provide hands-on exposure to real-world challenges while contributing to meaningful projects, allowing participants to gain insight into UNHCR's operations and international protection work, and develop professional skills that will support their future career growth.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will assist in the design, development, and implementation of activities carried out by the Protection/Solutions Unit. Responsibilities include supporting participatory assessments and ongoing consultations with refugees and other individuals in need of international protection, assisting with the translation of relevant protection documents, and facilitating communication with these individuals. The intern will also support the implementation of Communication with Communities initiatives and the Accountability to Affected Populations tool, such as the protection hotline. Researching issues related to protection and durable solutions, drafting factsheets and presentations, compiling inputs, and conducting reporting activities are also part of the role. Furthermore, the intern will support the organization of capacity-building initiatives, events, and administrative tasks as required.
Required Qualifications: To be eligible for the internship, candidates must be either recent graduates (having completed their studies within two years of applying) or current students in a graduate or undergraduate program from a university or higher education facility accredited by IAU/UNESCO. Candidates must have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant to the work of UNHCR. Previous UNHCR internship experience is acceptable, provided the total cumulative full-time internship duration does not exceed eight months.
Educational Background: Candidates should have a background in fields relevant to humanitarian work, social sciences, international relations, or other related disciplines. A strong academic record and relevant coursework will be beneficial for applicants.
Experience: While prior experience in the humanitarian sector is not mandatory, any relevant volunteer work, internships, or academic projects related to refugee protection, community engagement, or social services will be advantageous. The internship is designed for individuals looking to gain experience and develop their skills in a professional setting.
Languages: Proficiency in English is required for this position. Working knowledge of Portuguese and/or Spanish is considered an asset, as it will facilitate communication with local communities and stakeholders. Interns are responsible for acquiring and renewing their visas and residence permits, obtaining medical certification, and complying with taxation requirements if applicable. The selected candidate will need to provide proof of funding from their sponsoring institution, health insurance coverage, and a certificate of good health from a qualified medical practitioner. The sponsoring institution will provide non-reimbursable financial support in the form of a stipend or allowance for the internship period. Travel expenses to and from the internship location will be the responsibility of the sponsoring institution. UNHCR does not provide remuneration for interns during the internship period.
