Job Overview: The Urban Development and Housing Intern will be responsible for supporting UN-Habitat's initiatives in the Republic of Congo, particularly in the areas of housing, spatial planning, and environmental management. The intern will work under the supervision of the Programme Management Officer responsible for the Central Africa Sub Regional Office. This internship is designed to provide practical experience in urban development and housing, allowing the intern to engage with various stakeholders, assist in project development, and contribute to the implementation of UN-Habitat's portfolio. The position emphasizes the importance of community engagement and resource mobilization, as well as the need for effective communication and outreach strategies to promote sustainable urbanization.
Duties and Responsibilities: The intern will perform a variety of tasks, including: assisting in identifying opportunities within communities and translating problems into project concepts; supporting the preparation of meetings with potential partners and donors; developing communication and outreach tools; tracking key indicators and monitoring reports; assisting in preparing layouts, engineering calculations, design drawings, and visual aids; supporting fieldwork related to urban development and housing projects; collecting and integrating data; assisting with website and social media engagement; and performing miscellaneous assignments as needed. The intern will also be responsible for organizing workshops and making PowerPoint presentations during meetings, requiring effective communication skills in both French and English.
Required Qualifications: Applicants must meet one of the following criteria: be enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or have graduated with a Bachelor's degree, Master's, PhD, or equivalent. Candidates should be computer literate in standard software applications, particularly Microsoft Office Suite, and demonstrate a keen interest in the work of the United Nations. Additionally, applicants should have the ability to interact successfully with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds and beliefs, showing tolerance and understanding of differing opinions.
Educational Background: The preferred areas of study for this internship include Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Community Mobilization, Public Health, and Geography. Applicants must be students in their final year of a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. program, or have completed such a program. A field of study closely related to the internship is required, and applicants should be prepared to provide proof of their academic status.
Experience: While professional work experience is not required for this internship, candidates should have relevant academic experience or coursework related to urban development, housing, or environmental management. The internship is designed for individuals who are eager to learn and gain practical experience in the field, and as such, previous UN internship experience is not a prerequisite.
Languages: Fluency in oral and written French is required for this internship position, as it is one of the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
