Job Overview: The Environmental Evaluation Coordinator will play a crucial role in the Future Circular Collider (FCC) project, which is CERN's next flagship initiative. This position involves overseeing and coordinating the environmental evaluation studies necessary for the project's authorisation process. The coordinator will be responsible for ensuring compliance with both French and Swiss regulatory requirements, particularly in relation to environmental impact assessments for a new cross-border particle accelerator project. This role requires managing contracts with consulting firms and ensuring that all evaluations are consistent and meet the necessary standards. The coordinator will also be expected to contribute to multi-criteria impact analyses and integrate feedback from relevant authorities, ensuring that public concerns are addressed and communicated effectively to CERN management.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Environmental Evaluation Coordinator include:
Ensuring technical and administrative coordination between appointed consulting firms, guaranteeing overall consistency of the environmental evaluation for both France and Switzerland.
Ensuring regulatory compliance of the environmental evaluation study in accordance with the French Environmental Code and Swiss legislation on environmental impact assessments (EIE).
Organising and chairing follow-up technical committees with experts, ensuring traceability of decisions made.
Contributing to multi-criteria impact analysis and integrating avoidance, reduction, and compensation measures into the project.
Seeking and integrating feedback from French and Swiss authorities involved in the project.
Monitoring the schedule, budget, and deliverables, ensuring the quality of produced documents.
Sharing knowledge and proactively raising awareness among the Project Office and CERN management regarding public concerns related to the project.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in Environmental Engineering or a related field. Additionally, they should have demonstrated experience in environmental evaluation processes for complex or large-scale projects in France, providing technical and management expertise in environmental protection, and coordinating multidisciplinary consulting firms. Experience in liaising with environmental authorities and technical partners is also essential. Knowledge of EU regulations, particularly French and Swiss environmental regulations, is highly desirable.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field is required for this position. Equivalent relevant experience may also be considered in lieu of formal education. Candidates should have a solid understanding of environmental assessment methods and the ability to analyze interactions between various environmental components.
Experience: The ideal candidate should have substantial experience in environmental evaluation processes, particularly for complex or large-scale projects in France. They should also have experience in providing technical and management expertise in environmental protection, as well as in coordinating multidisciplinary consulting firms. Experience in working with environmental authorities and technical partners is crucial, and prior experience as an environmental engineer on cross-border large-scale projects would be an asset.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written French is mandatory, with a commitment to learn English. Proficiency in English will be considered an advantage, as it will facilitate communication with international teams and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is a limited duration contract for 5 years, with the possibility of extension up to 8 years and eligibility for an indefinite contract tenure. The role requires a commitment to working 40 hours per week and offers hybrid working flexibility. The position may involve interventions in underground installations, and a valid driving license is required. The job grade is classified as 6-7, and the reference for this position is HSE-ENV-EC-2026-59-LD.
