Job Overview: The Animal Production and Health Specialist position is crucial for implementing effective breeding techniques and ensuring the health and nutrition of livestock in Afghanistan. The role involves working closely with local farmers to enhance livestock genetic quality through natural breeding and artificial insemination. The specialist will monitor animal health, develop tailored nutrition programs, and maintain detailed breeding records to assess and improve breeding success. Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Animal Production and Health Specialist include collaborating with local farmers to select and improve breeding stock, assisting in the implementation of best breeding practices, monitoring the health status of breeding animals, and developing nutritional programs tailored to the needs of livestock. The specialist will maintain detailed breeding records, track and analyze performance data, conduct training sessions for farmers, and promote awareness of sustainable practices. Additional responsibilities include coordinating vaccination schedules, supporting the head of the animal production and health team, providing training and supervision for field staff, and conducting regular field visits to monitor livestock conditions. The specialist will also liaise with the Regional Coordinator to share updated information on livestock activities and perform any other related duties as required.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in veterinary science, livestock production, or a related field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in veterinary or livestock production is required, with at least 2 years of experience in a UN or INGO setting being desirable. Candidates should have a working knowledge of English and local languages (Dari and/or Pashto) at level C. Additionally, candidates must be nationals of Afghanistan and demonstrate core competencies such as results focus, teamwork, communication, and building effective relationships.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in veterinary science, livestock production, or a related field. It is essential that the degree is obtained from an institution accredited or recognized in the World Higher Education Database (WHED).
Experience: The position requires at least 5 years of relevant experience in veterinary or livestock production, with a preference for candidates who have 2 years of experience working with the United Nations or international non-governmental organizations (INGOs). This experience should demonstrate a strong understanding of animal health and production practices, particularly in the context of developing countries.
Languages: Candidates must have a working knowledge of English and local languages, specifically Dari and/or Pashto, at level C. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication with local farmers and stakeholders.
