Job Overview: The Environmental Specialist (ET Consultant) position at the World Bank in Bamako, Mali, is designed to support the Bank's expanding Environmental and Social Framework (ESF) agenda for the Mali portfolio. The successful candidate will report directly to the SAWM2 Practice Manager and will collaborate closely with the Mali country unit and task teams. This role is critical in ensuring that environmental risks are effectively managed in development projects, contributing to policy dialogue, and enhancing the capacity of local stakeholders in environmental risk management. The position requires a proactive approach to integrating environmental considerations into project planning and execution, as well as a commitment to fostering collaboration across various teams within the World Bank Group.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Environmental Specialist will be responsible for a range of core duties including: providing high-quality technical support for the implementation of the OPs/ESF in the Mali portfolio; participating in project preparation, appraisal, and supervision; contributing to policy dialogue and analytical work on environmental risk management; delivering capacity building and technical training on E&S risk management for national agencies and local governments; collaborating with other World Bank Group teams to strengthen environmental risk management; actively participating in cross-practice teams; and engaging in the Bank-wide professional community of E&S staff. The role also involves organizing needs assessments and ensuring compliance with environmental safeguards throughout the project lifecycle.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or PhD in environmental science, geography, environmental or civil engineering, or related disciplines, along with a minimum of five years of professional experience in the environmental sector and environmental risk management. Proven knowledge and experience in addressing issues covered by the World Bank’s ESF and environmental safeguards policies are essential. Candidates should also have in-depth knowledge of environmental development issues in Mali, experience with environmental and social assessments, and the ability to effectively communicate complex environmental issues to diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: The position requires a Master’s degree or PhD in relevant fields such as environmental science, geography, or engineering. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of environmental risk management and the application of the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Framework.
Experience: A minimum of five years of professional experience in the environmental sector is required. Candidates should have experience in environmental risk management, knowledge of environmental development issues in Mali, and familiarity with the World Bank’s safeguards policies and ESF. Previous working experience with international finance institutions is highly desirable.
