Job Overview:
The Electrician position is crucial for maintaining the electrical systems within the UNHCR premises. The incumbent will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, overhaul, and rebuilding of diesel generators and other electrical appliances. This role requires adherence to safety programs related to the operation of air-conditioning, refrigeration installations, electrical systems, and power tools. The Electrician will ensure that all electrical installations meet safety standards and will be accountable for performing duties in line with UNHCR's regulatory framework, which includes the UN Charter and relevant policies. The position also involves training co-workers in preventive maintenance and ensuring compliance with local and international electrical standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Electrician will have a comprehensive set of responsibilities, including: ensuring that all new electrical installations are performed according to acceptable safety norms; identifying and advising on existing electrical installations that require remedial action; developing and following up on maintenance schedules for electrical installations; ensuring that all installations are properly maintained to prevent hazards; overseeing maintenance activities on power generators; performing basic maintenance tasks such as checking oil levels and fuelling; identifying obsolete or unsafe equipment and recommending replacements; preparing lists of required spare parts; assisting in the purchase of quality electrical materials; enforcing compliance with electrical standards; conducting physical inventory checks; inspecting and testing generator systems; preparing reports on inspections and estimates; training co-workers; managing risks; and performing other related duties as required.

Required Qualifications:
The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with a High School Diploma, or 1 year of relevant work experience with a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Essential qualifications include certificates in Electrical Studies, Electricity, and Electronics/Electro-Mechanics. Functional skills in electrical equipment installation and maintenance are also essential for this role. The candidate should demonstrate a proactive approach to safety and compliance in all electrical work.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a High School Diploma or equivalent, with relevant certifications in electrical studies or related fields. A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is preferred but not mandatory. The educational background should include formal training in electrical systems and maintenance practices.

Experience:
The Electrician position requires at least 2 years of relevant experience in electrical maintenance and installation. Candidates with 1 year of experience and a Bachelor’s degree may also be considered. Experience in the power supply field is desirable, although not specified as essential. The role demands a practical understanding of electrical systems and the ability to perform maintenance tasks effectively.

Languages:
Knowledge of English is mandatory, along with the UN working language of the duty station if it is not English. For General Service jobs, knowledge of English and/or the UN working language is required. Familiarity with the local language is also beneficial, particularly for National Professional jobs.
