Job Overview: The Associate Public Health Officer plays a crucial role within a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the development and implementation of UNHCR's public health programs. These programs are designed to meet minimum health standards and reduce morbidity and mortality among forcibly displaced and stateless individuals. The incumbent will provide technical guidance and support to partners, ensuring effective responses to public health challenges. This role involves overseeing health strategies, advocating for the inclusion of refugees in national health systems, and aligning UNHCR's health initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Associate Public Health Officer will also monitor public health responses and provide technical guidance to management, particularly in emergencies and disease outbreaks.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties and responsibilities of the Associate Public Health Officer include:
Supporting the implementation of public health programs in collaboration with government, UN agencies, NGOs, and other partners.
Participating in coordination structures to enhance public health responses.
Assisting in emergency responses to refugee influxes and disease outbreaks.
Conducting assessments to identify health needs and aligning responses with national health systems.
Collaborating with stakeholders to develop public health response plans and funding appeals.
Supporting intersectoral collaboration to maximize the impact of health programs.
Implementing health information systems and ensuring data integration with national systems.
Strengthening the capacity of UNHCR and partners to maintain the integrity of public health programs.
Engaging in partnership forums to support health initiatives. 1
Identifying and managing risks related to public health objectives.
Required Qualifications: The required qualifications for the Associate Public Health Officer position include:
A minimum of three years of relevant experience with an undergraduate degree, two years with a graduate degree, or one year with a doctorate degree.
Essential experience in public health programming and understanding of health systems.
Experience in data collection and analysis, as well as collaboration with stakeholders to achieve public health objectives.
Functional skills in project monitoring and evaluation, public health epidemiology, and community health data collection and analysis.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess an undergraduate degree in a medical-related field such as Medicine, Medical Science, Nursing, Public Health, or Epidemiology. A master's degree in public health is considered a distinct advantage for this position.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of three years of relevant experience for candidates with an undergraduate degree, two years for those with a graduate degree, or one year for those with a doctorate. Experience in public health programming, data analysis, and collaboration with various stakeholders is essential. Desirable experience includes public health emergency preparedness and response, particularly in humanitarian contexts.
