Job Overview:
The position of Engineer with a specialization in software development at CERN involves contributing to the maintenance, development, optimization, and upgrade of software tools used for coordinating users, experiments, and activities at the EP irradiation facilities (IRRAD/GIF++). The engineer will explore opportunities to harmonize and consolidate individual tools to increase synergies and exploit commonalities in data models, as well as investigate new opportunities offered by machine learning and artificial intelligence, particularly in the field of natural language processing. The role requires adapting and modifying software tools based on input from facility coordinators, assisting with the operation of various tools, and ensuring the seamless flow of information between users and coordinators. The engineer will also be responsible for the long-term sustainability of the software platform and its integration within CERN's IT service structure, ensuring smooth, secure, and reliable operations of IT services.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The engineer will be tasked with adapting and modifying software tools in response to changes from facility coordinators. Responsibilities include assisting with the operation of tools such as the IRRAD Data Manager and online databases, supporting the maintenance and upgrade of software tools for the IRRAD and GIF++ facilities, and interfacing with accelerator teams to develop operational pages. The engineer will also focus on improving the long-term sustainability of the software platform, managing deployment, availability, and scalability, and ensuring reliable operation of IT services. Additionally, the engineer will be involved in troubleshooting, testing, and deploying modifications to web applications, and will be expected to have a strong understanding of user requirements.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must demonstrate a proven ability to understand and analyze user requirements, with the capability to design, plan, implement, test, troubleshoot, and deploy modifications to web applications. First-hand experience with platform-as-a-service (PaaS), container-based deployment, and orchestration strategies is essential. Practical experience with test-driven software development, knowledge of web services and APIs, and familiarity with modern machine learning and artificial intelligence models and tools are also required. Experience in particle physics, particularly in detector R&D and irradiation experiments, is considered an asset.

Educational Background:
Candidates should possess a professional background in Software Engineering or a related field. A Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience is required, or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Candidates must also be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State and should not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.

Experience:
The position requires candidates to have a professional background in software engineering, with a minimum of 2 years of experience for those with a Master's degree, or up to 3 years for those with a PhD. Experience in software development, particularly in the context of web applications and tools used in scientific research, is essential.
