Job Overview:
The consultant will play a crucial role in supporting gender mainstreaming across UNEP FI and implementing UNEP FI’s social and human rights strategy, particularly focusing on gender issues within the banking and insurance sectors. This position requires a proactive approach to ensure that gender considerations are integrated into UNEP FI’s operations and initiatives. The consultant will be responsible for updating UNEP FI's social website and internal knowledge center, publishing the gender action plan, and facilitating global and regional workshops, webinars, and peer exchanges on social issues. The role demands collaboration with various teams to ensure that gender is effectively mainstreamed across UNEP FI’s activities and that the organization’s social and human rights strategy is executed efficiently. The consultant will also engage with governance bodies on social issues and contribute to the development of UNEP FI’s strategy and work plan for 2026, particularly in relation to the Principles for Responsible Banking and Principles for Sustainable Insurance.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will be tasked with several specific responsibilities, including:
  • Keeping UNEP FI's social website and internal knowledge center updated with relevant information and resources.
  • Publishing and implementing the gender action plan for UNEP FI.
  • Delivering global and regional workshops, webinars, and peer exchanges focused on social issues.
  • Supporting various thematic, regional, and industry teams to ensure gender is integrated into UNEP FI’s work.
  • Engaging with work stream leads, members, and stakeholders to implement UNEP FI’s social and human rights strategy.
  • Providing operational support for the delivery of UNEP FI’s strategy and work plan, particularly in relation to gender.
  • Supporting the delivery of industry, thematic, and regional activities from a social issues and human rights perspective.
  • Assisting UNEP FI communication efforts by providing content on social issues and human rights for newsletters and targeted communications.
  • Maintaining the social issues pages of the UNEP FI website. 1
  • Building and maintaining strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in the field of social and human rights.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a master’s degree in social sciences, human rights, or a related field. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree may be accepted if the candidate has at least 7 years of relevant experience. The position requires a strong understanding of social issues, particularly human rights, and their connection to environmental impacts. Candidates should have substantial experience working with both private and public sector entities to address social impacts and promote positive outcomes.

Educational Background:
A master’s degree in social, human rights, or a related field is required for this position. In cases where a candidate holds a bachelor’s degree, they must have a minimum of 7 years of relevant professional experience to be considered eligible for the role.

Experience:
The consultant must have at least five years of professional experience in social issues, particularly focusing on human rights, with specific expertise in just transition or the intersection of climate/environment and social issues. Experience working in the Latin America and Caribbean (LAC) region is highly desirable, as it will provide valuable context for the consultant's work.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory, as it is the working language of UNEP FI. Additionally, knowledge of Spanish is required to facilitate communication and collaboration within the organization and with stakeholders. Proficiency in other United Nations languages is considered an asset, enhancing the consultant's ability to engage with a diverse range of partners.

Additional Notes:
This position is remote and is expected to last for a duration of four months. The consultant will work under the overall supervision of the Head of UNEP FI and report directly to the Programme Management Officer. The role requires strong interpersonal skills, the ability to manage multiple tasks across diverse projects, and a commitment to delivering high-quality work within agreed timeframes.
