Job Overview:
The position involves contributing to the Climate Action Division of IOM's Regional Office for the East, Horn, and Southern Africa. The consultant will support the implementation of IOM's institutional strategy on Migration, Environment, and Climate Change (2021-2030). This includes raising the visibility of the migration-environment-climate change nexus, particularly in relation to youth engagement. The consultant will be responsible for producing advocacy materials, participating in relevant conferences and events, and enhancing youth capacity in addressing human mobility in the context of climate change. The role requires staying updated on MECC-related issues and challenges in the region and supporting the grant implementation phase of youth capacity building programs.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The consultant will perform various tasks including increasing the visibility of the MECC nexus through social media and other platforms, supporting the production of promotional materials, participating in meetings and events, improving youth engagement in climate change issues, and staying informed about MECC-related challenges. Specific deliverables include a youth capacity briefing note by April 30, 2026, contributions to blogs and media products by August 31, 2026, and a mentoring plan for YCBP grantees by December 18, 202
  • The consultant will also develop a workplan in coordination with IOM and regularly communicate updates on ongoing activities.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must have a university degree (Master's or equivalent) in Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Development, or Migration Studies. They should possess strong interpersonal and intercultural skills, the ability to work effectively in diverse teams, and a commitment to IOM's values of inclusion, integrity, professionalism, courage, and empathy. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to engage effectively with youth and stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A second university degree or equivalent (Master's or higher) in relevant fields such as Environmental Studies, Climate Change, Development, or Migration Studies is required for this position. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of migration and climate change issues.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least three years of experience in youth engagement specifically in the East, Horn, and Southern Africa regions. They must demonstrate knowledge of migration, environment, and climate change, as well as experience in climate mobility advocacy at regional and global events. Proven experience in supporting youth capacity enhancement programs on MECC and in producing publications on youth engagement in MECC is also required.

Languages:
Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English is mandatory. Proficiency in IOM's official languages, which include French and Spanish, is considered an asset and will be evaluated during the selection process through written and/or oral assessments.

Additional Notes:
The position may require travel to selected events organized by the Climate Action Division. The appointment is subject to funding confirmation and medical fitness certification. IOM provides coverage against occupational accidents and illnesses but does not offer evacuation or medical insurance for non-occupational incidents.
