Job Overview:
The position involves conducting a midline household survey as part of a project aimed at improving the incomes of smallholder coffee and maize farmers in Jimma, Ethiopia. The survey will assess the impact of the project on agricultural practices and productivity among approximately 3,000 households. The survey firm will be responsible for various tasks, including questionnaire development, enumerator recruitment and training, data collection, and ensuring data quality. The survey is expected to take place in April 2026, and the firm will need to manage logistics and ensure ethical standards are met during data collection. The role requires collaboration with IFPRI and adherence to project timelines and quality standards.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The survey firm will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Providing feedback on the midline questionnaire developed by IFPRI and translating it into Amharic and Afan Oromo.
  • Recruiting and managing a team of 30 enumerators, 6 supervisors, and 1 survey coordinator, including alternate candidates.
  • Organizing a comprehensive 7-day training session for enumerators, which includes classroom instruction and pilot testing.
  • Conducting data collection among 3,000 households across four districts in the Jimma zone, ensuring logistical arrangements such as vehicle rentals and insurance.
  • Monitoring data collection quality through random visits and back-check surveys.
  • Ensuring ethical standards are maintained during interviews, including informed consent and data confidentiality.
  • Preparing detailed reports and conducting debriefing sessions post-survey.

Required Qualifications:
The survey firm must demonstrate documented experience in organizing and implementing at least three large-scale household surveys in Ethiopia, with a sample size comparable to the midline survey. The proposed team should have a minimum of 3 years of university education and experience in conducting rural household surveys using Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), preferably with SurveyCTO. Additionally, the firm must provide a financial report showcasing proficiency in managing and documenting expenditures and must be capable of completing the survey work within the specified timeline.

Educational Background:
The survey team members, including enumerators, supervisors, and coordinators, should possess at least 3 years of university education. This educational background is essential to ensure that the team has the necessary skills and knowledge to conduct the survey effectively and to understand the complexities involved in agricultural practices and data collection methodologies.

Experience:
The firm should have substantial experience in conducting rural household surveys, particularly in coffee-producing regions of Ethiopia. This experience is crucial for understanding the local context and ensuring that the survey is relevant and effective in capturing the necessary data.

Languages:
The mandatory languages for this position include Amharic and Afan Oromo, as the survey will be conducted in these languages. Proficiency in English is also required for communication with IFPRI and for the preparation of application documents. Additional languages relevant to the local context may be considered beneficial but are not mandatory.

Additional Notes:
The duration of the contract for this position is 4 months, covering the entire process from preparation to completion of the survey. The firm is expected to work closely with IFPRI and adhere to the project timeline. This position is focused on national recruitment, and the firm must be based in Ethiopia.
