Job Overview: The Spacecraft Operations Engineer will be part of the Earth Observation Missions Division within the Directorate of Operations at ESA. The engineer will work closely with the Copernicus Sentinels Imaging Missions Operations Unit, assisting in the preparation and execution of mission operations, including both routine and special operations. The engineer will also be responsible for ensuring the operational readiness of ground segment systems and products necessary for mission success, contributing to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the operations team.
Duties and Responsibilities: The duties of the Spacecraft Operations Engineer include: assisting the Spacecraft Operations Managers (SOMs) in defining, preparing, and executing mission operations; performing anomaly investigations and resolutions; evaluating performance and reporting findings; acting as SOM when delegated; supporting the specification, development, and maintenance of ground segment systems; interfacing with internal and external stakeholders; providing expert support to ESA programs; and preparing for new missions. The engineer will also participate in reviews and operations of other missions as required, ensuring that the Unit's mandate is met and that operational standards are maintained.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a master's degree in engineering or physics. Additionally, they should have a minimum of three years of direct experience in flight operations, demonstrating proficiency in planning tools for multi-instrument operations. Experience in interfacing with international partners and a strong capacity for teamwork are essential. Candidates should also exhibit self-motivation, autonomy, and the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
Educational Background: A master's degree in engineering or physics is required for this position. This educational background provides the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to understand complex spacecraft operations and the technical challenges associated with them.
Experience: The position requires at least three years of relevant experience in flight operations, particularly in the context of spacecraft and mission operations. Candidates should have a proven track record of working with planning tools and collaborating with external partners, showcasing their ability to manage complex operational tasks effectively.
Languages: Proficiency in English or French is mandatory, as these are the working languages of ESA. Knowledge of another language from an ESA member state is considered an asset, enhancing communication and collaboration within the diverse workforce.
