Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
The European Space Agency (ESA) is an intergovernmental organization dedicated to the exploration of space. Established in 1975, ESA has grown to include 22 member states and employs over 2,200 staff members. The agency's mission is to shape the development of Europe's space capability and ensure that investment in space continues to deliver benefits to the citizens of Europe and the world. ESA operates in various domains, including Earth observation, human spaceflight, exploration, and telecommunications, and collaborates with numerous international partners to advance scientific knowledge and technological innovation.

Job Overview:
The ESA Graduate Trainee in Earth Observation Ocean Science will be integrated into the Science Section of the Climate Action, Sustainability and Science Department within the Directorate of Earth Observation Programmes. This position is designed for recent graduates or those in the final stages of their master's degree, focusing on the study of the Mediterranean Sea's ocean dynamics. The trainee will engage in research that combines satellite data and in-situ measurements to enhance understanding of ocean circulation and its impact on climate and marine ecosystems. The role emphasizes collaboration with international scientific communities and aims to address pressing environmental challenges through innovative research methodologies.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Graduate Trainee will be responsible for developing, testing, and validating new methodologies for reconstructing the dynamical state of the Mediterranean Sea. This includes merging high-resolution data from the SWOT mission with other satellite altimetry and in-situ measurements. The trainee will also work on enhancing the outcomes of the ongoing 4DMED project, focusing on the development of data-driven methodologies to reconstruct the 4D dynamics of the Mediterranean Sea. Additionally, the trainee will apply existing methodologies for estimating vertical currents and compare results with existing Mediterranean Sea products. The position requires active participation in research campaigns and collaboration with various stakeholders to achieve project objectives.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess strong technical competencies in relevant domains, including knowledge of oceanography, climate science, and data analysis. Experience gained through internships, project work, or extracurricular activities will be beneficial. A general understanding of the space sector and ESA's programs is also required. Behavioral competencies such as result orientation, operational efficiency, fostering cooperation, and relationship management are essential for success in this role.

Educational Background:

This educational background is crucial for understanding the complex interactions within ocean systems and for applying advanced scientific methodologies in research.

Experience:
The position is aimed at recent graduates or those nearing completion of their master's degree, thus requiring limited professional experience. However, any relevant internships or project work in oceanography, climate science, or related fields will be considered an asset. The ability to work independently and as part of a multicultural team is essential, and previous experience in international teams will be advantageous.

Languages:
Proficiency in English or French is mandatory, as these are the working languages of the Agency. Knowledge of another language from an ESA Member State is considered an asset, enhancing communication within the diverse team environment.
