Job Overview: The consultant will play a crucial role in addressing the educational emergency faced by children in Sudan due to ongoing conflict and humanitarian challenges. The position involves contextualizing JICA's Mathematics Worksheets to align with Sudan's curriculum, monitoring learners' progress through pre- and post-tests, and supporting the development of a teacher training package. The consultant will work closely with various stakeholders, including UNICEF, the Khartoum State Ministry of Education, and implementing partner NGOs, to ensure that the educational needs of children are met effectively. The consultant will also be responsible for delivering a series of reports and training materials that will enhance the educational experience for children in conflict-affected areas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Contextualize JICA’s Mathematics Worksheets by reviewing and assessing their relevance to Sudan’s mathematics curriculum, reordering topics, and making necessary adjustments for cultural suitability.
Monitor learners’ progress by developing pre- and post-tests for Grades 1–4, analyzing results to assess the effectiveness of the remedial lessons.
Support the development of a teacher training package that includes interactive teaching approaches and methods for identifying appropriate grade levels for students.
Facilitate discussions with education stakeholders and ensure formal approval of the contextualized worksheets.
Conduct a small pilot of the contextualized worksheets and document all meetings with ministry officials.
Prepare and submit deliverables, including analysis reports, contextualized worksheets, tests, and training materials, ensuring they meet the required standards and timelines.
Required Qualifications:
A Master's degree or advanced university degree in mathematics education, pedagogy, or related fields is required.
Expertise in numeracy skills acquisition and familiarity with Sudan’s mathematics curriculum and pedagogy.
A minimum of five years of professional experience in mathematics education, with primary-level teaching experience being an advantage.
Experience working with UN or international organizations is considered an asset.
Strong design, development, analysis, and communication skills in both Arabic and English.
Ability to work effectively under tight deadlines and manage multiple tasks.
Educational Background: Candidates must possess a Master's degree or other advanced university degree in mathematics education, pedagogy, or related fields such as basic education, foundational literacy and numeracy, or curriculum and instruction. This educational background is essential to ensure that the consultant has the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively contribute to the project.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of five years of professional experience in mathematics education. This experience should ideally include primary-level teaching, as well as familiarity with educational practices in crisis-affected settings. Experience working with international organizations, particularly in educational contexts, is highly valued and considered an asset for this role.
Languages: Fluency in Arabic is mandatory, as the consultant will be working with local stakeholders and developing materials in Sudanese Arabic. Proficiency in English is also required, as reports and communications will need to be conducted in English. Knowledge of additional languages may be considered a plus but is not mandatory.

The consultant will work under the supervision of UNICEF Sudan and will be required to collaborate closely with various stakeholders, including the Khartoum State Ministry of Education and implementing partner NGOs. The position is full-time and may involve travel to different locations within Sudan.
