Job Description
Job Posting Organization:
CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading scientific research institution established in 195
  • It is located in Geneva, Switzerland, and is known for its groundbreaking work in particle physics. CERN employs over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists and engineers from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration among diverse professionals in various fields, including engineering, technical, scientific, and administrative roles. CERN's mission is to push the frontiers of science and technology, contributing to our understanding of the universe through cutting-edge research and development.

Job Overview:
The Mechatronics Engineer position is integral to the North Area Consolidation (NA-CONS) program at CERN, focusing on the renovation and enhancement of Beam Intercepting Devices (BIDs). The role involves developing and deploying control system solutions, contributing to system integration, functional testing, and commissioning of BID equipment. The engineer will design, implement, and optimize control and monitoring algorithms to improve reliability and enable predictive maintenance. Additionally, the position requires the development and maintenance of high-level software interfaces and APIs, ensuring robust communication between control layers and external systems. The engineer will also implement and enhance monitoring and diagnostic tools to support operational teams and improve long-term system maintainability. This role is crucial for ensuring reliable and maintainable BID operation in CERN's North Area, particularly during the Long Shutdown 3 period.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Mechatronics Engineer will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Develop and deploy control system solutions for Beam Intercepting Devices as part of the NA-CONS program.
  • Contribute to system integration, functional testing, and commissioning of BID equipment, ensuring reliable local and remote operation.
  • Design, implement, and optimize control and monitoring algorithms to improve reliability, enable predictive maintenance, and support piquet interventions.
  • Develop and maintain high-level software interfaces and APIs, ensuring robust communication between control layers and external systems.
  • Implement and enhance monitoring and diagnostic tools, supporting operational teams and improving long-term system maintainability.
  • Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, contributing to shared software and system developments.
  • Document processes and communicate effectively within the team and with stakeholders.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess hands-on experience in control systems, testing, and commissioning of electromechanical systems. A solid understanding of hardware-software integration in large-scale experimental or industrial environments is essential. Experience with API development and high-level software integration for distributed control systems is required. Candidates should also have hands-on experience in testing, functional verification, and commissioning of control or electromechanical systems. Effective communication skills, a proactive and structured approach to collaborative development, and the ability to work in a team are crucial for this role.
