Job Overview:
The Northern Division SRH, STI, HIV and BBV Surveillance Officer will play a crucial role in supporting the implementation of surveillance activities related to sexual and reproductive health (SRH), HIV, and blood-borne viruses (BBVs) within the Northern Division of Fiji. This position involves working closely with the medical officer in charge of the Northern SRH Clinic and receiving technical guidance from various public health specialists. The officer will be responsible for routine data collection, collation, and quality assurance across health facilities and laboratories. The role requires a proactive approach to data management and the ability to work independently while also collaborating with multiple stakeholders to enhance the effectiveness of surveillance systems. The officer will be expected to contribute to the development and improvement of surveillance tools and processes, ensuring that data collected is accurate, timely, and useful for decision-making at both divisional and national levels.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the implementation of divisional surveillance activities for SRH, HIV, and BBVs, focusing on routine data collection, collation, and quality assurance across health facilities and laboratories.
  • Extract data from national case reporting systems and sentinel sites, ensuring consistent use of approved case definitions.
  • Conduct routine data entry, cleaning, verification, and management of surveillance data submitted from health facilities and laboratories.
  • Facilitate regular coordination with public and private laboratories to ensure timely submission and verification of test results.
  • Prepare routine divisional surveillance reports, summaries, and presentations to support program monitoring and decision-making.
  • Support the delivery of training and mentoring for facility and subdivisional surveillance focal points.
  • Participate in divisional and national coordination platforms to strengthen surveillance-program linkages.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation of surveillance activities and ensure compliance with national data protection and ethical standards.
  • Provide feedback to support national refinement of surveillance tools and workflows.

Required Qualifications:
Essential qualifications include a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in public health, epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field. Strong organizational, communication, and data management skills are required, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. A commitment to confidentiality is essential. Desirable qualifications include postgraduate qualifications in related disciplines and experience in public health programs, training, or capacity building.

Educational Background:
Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree or its equivalent in public health, epidemiology, health sciences, or a related field. Postgraduate qualifications in related disciplines are considered an advantage.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 2 years of experience in public health surveillance. Desirable experience includes involvement in public health programs, training or capacity building, and familiarity with Fiji’s health system and BBV/STI priorities.

Languages:
Fluency in the English language is essential for this position. Additionally, fluency in the iTaukei language is considered an asset, enhancing communication with local populations.

Additional Notes:
The salary for this role will range from FJD 32,999.24 to FJD 53,034.50, depending on qualifications and experience. The initial duration of the contract is 12 months, with the possibility of extension. This position is subject to local recruitment and will be filled by Fiji nationals recruited in the local commuting area of the duty station.
