Job Overview: The Economist position at UNDP involves integrating economic analysis and policy advice into the country programme delivered in the Maldives. The role requires a keen awareness of the changing development and political landscape, with a focus on embedding strategic interventions that align with the SDGs. The Economist will work closely with the Resident Representative and Deputy Resident Representative, collaborating with various teams within UNDP to ensure that economic solutions are effectively implemented. This position is crucial for advising on sustainable development policies and facilitating dialogue among government officials, development partners, and civil society. The Economist will also be responsible for leading the development of the National Human Development Report and ensuring that it provides valuable insights for policy formulation and programming design.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead policy and technical advisory services to strengthen programme development and implementation, including advising on country programmes, managing thematic portfolios, and conceptualizing the Development Finance Assessment.
Provide analysis and research in priority thematic areas, support the preparation of policy briefs, and lead the development of the National Human Development Report.
Advise national government counterparts on sustainable development issues, support monitoring and reporting of SDG progress, and leverage UNDP’s regional and global programmes.
Engage in representation and advocacy to strengthen partnerships with UN agencies, IFIs, and civil society, and contribute to resource mobilization efforts.
Promote awareness of UNDP’s work across the Asia-Pacific region and collaborate with the regional economist network.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Economics. A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in Economics combined with two additional years of qualifying experience will also be considered. A Ph.D. in Economics is advantageous. Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of experience (9 years with a bachelor’s degree) in economic research and policy implementation at the national or international level, with extensive experience in policy-level analysis and advisory roles. Proven experience in preparing high-quality policy briefs and guidance notes for senior policymakers is required, along with strong analytical capabilities and knowledge of the SDGs.
Educational Background: An advanced university degree (master’s degree or equivalent) in Economics is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in Economics with additional qualifying experience will be considered. A Ph.D. in Economics is an advantage.
Experience: Candidates should have a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in economic research and policy implementation, or 9 years with a bachelor’s degree. Experience in policy analysis, advisory roles, and preparing policy briefs is essential. Familiarity with the SDGs and experience in stakeholder engagement are also important.
Languages: Fluency in English and Dhivehi is required. Proficiency in additional languages may be considered an asset.
