Job Posting Organization:
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is an organization dedicated to building scientific capacity in developing countries. Established in 1983, TWAS has been instrumental in promoting scientific research and education in these regions. TWAS also hosts the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Trieste Secretariat, which collaborates with leading scientific minds to influence policy and improve public health and education in science.

Job Overview:
The Coordinator for the InterAcademy Partnership will play a pivotal role in overseeing the strategic planning, program implementation, and daily operations of the IAP secretariat. This position is crucial for ensuring that the IAP aligns with the programmatic and policy directions set by the elected governing Board. The incumbent will also manage the Science Diplomacy Programme, which involves engaging in international events and capacity-building initiatives. The role requires a proactive approach to developing new project proposals and mobilizing resources, as well as representing IAP at various international forums. The Coordinator will work closely with the TWAS director" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">Executive Director and will be responsible for high-level communications and outreach, ensuring that the IAP's objectives are met effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • IAP Programme Coordination and Management: The incumbent will guide the development of the IAP Strategic Plan and annual workplans, ensuring that they are aligned with the overarching goals of the organization. They will develop new project proposals, contribute to resource mobilization efforts, and represent IAP at international events. Additionally, the Coordinator will plan and coordinate statutory meetings of the IAP Board and General Assembly, providing high-level support to the Board and its committees. They will draft reports, monitor strategic plans, and manage competitive calls for proposals and contracts.
  • Communications and Outreach: The Coordinator will provide editorial and substantive guidance on all IAP communications, ensuring that the messaging is clear and impactful. They will supervise the preparation of annual reports, policy briefs, and other knowledge products, and ensure that the IAP website is regularly updated. The Coordinator will also author or co-author scientific and policy publications.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Operations: The incumbent will oversee the daily operations of the IAP secretariat, including staff supervision and budget oversight. They will monitor and evaluate the implementation of programmes and projects, ensuring compliance with financial rules and regulations. Regular briefs will be provided to the IAP leadership and TWAS Executive Director.
  • Science Diplomacy Programme: The Coordinator will oversee the TWAS Science Diplomacy programme, following the Strategic Planning 2026-203
  • This includes participation in Science Diplomacy events, organizing capacity-building initiatives, establishing partnerships, and developing training materials.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) preferably in International Relations, Public or Business Administration, Science Policy, Social Sciences, or a related field. A minimum of four years of progressively responsible professional experience in international programme management, science policy, or a related area is required. Essential skills include experience in liaising with governmental bodies and funding agencies, as well as strong communication and organizational abilities. Candidates should demonstrate accountability, professionalism, and a results-focused approach.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) is required for this position. The preferred fields of study include International Relations, Public or Business Administration, Science Policy, Social Sciences, or related disciplines. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of international program management and science policy.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of progressively responsible professional experience in international programme management, science policy, or a related area. Candidates should have a proven track record of managing complex projects and working within international frameworks, particularly in relation to science diplomacy and partnerships.

Languages:
Excellent knowledge (spoken and written) of English is mandatory for this position. Additionally, a good working knowledge of Italian is desirable, and knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is considered an asset. Proficiency in multiple languages will enhance communication and collaboration in this international role.

Additional Notes:
The contract for this position is a project appointment with an initial duration of one year, with the possibility of extension subject to the availability of funds and satisfactory performance. The position is open to both internal and external candidates. UNESCO offers a competitive salary, with the approximate annual starting salary for this post being 92,750 US dollars.
