The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda and promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system. The Environment Management Group (EMG), which is supported by UNEP, was established in 2001 and is a UN System-wide coordination body focused on environment and human settlements. The EMG works through various mechanisms including technical meetings and task teams to address international environmental issues.

Job Overview:
The intern will work under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer at the EMG Secretariat, assisting in enhancing collaboration within the UN system on environmental issues. The intern's role will involve supporting interagency collaboration on various environmental topics such as biodiversity loss, pollution, urbanization, and the intersection of gender and human rights with environmental concerns. The intern will also assist in organizing EMG Nexus Dialogues, promoting internal environmental and social sustainability within the UN System, and contributing to the System-Wide Framework of Strategies on the Environment. Additionally, the intern will be involved in communications efforts to raise awareness and promote the work of the EMG.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Assist in facilitating interagency collaboration on environmental topics, including biodiversity loss, pollution, urbanization, and the relationship between gender and the environment.
  • Support the organization and execution of EMG Nexus Dialogues aimed at fostering dialogue and cooperation among UN agencies.
  • Contribute to initiatives promoting internal environmental and social sustainability within the UN System.
  • Assist in the implementation of the System-Wide Framework of Strategies on the Environment.
  • Help develop and disseminate communications materials to promote the work of the EMG and raise awareness of environmental issues.

Required Qualifications:
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements at the time of application: (1) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); (2) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or (3) Have graduated with a university degree. Preference will be given to candidates with a postgraduate qualification in environmental studies and/or social science, along with a genuine interest in environmental issues and digital media strategies. Candidates should also demonstrate computer literacy in standard software applications and a commitment to the ideals of the United Nations.

Educational Background:
Candidates must be enrolled in or have completed a university degree program. Specifically, applicants should be pursuing or have completed a degree in fields related to environmental studies, social sciences, or other relevant disciplines. A strong academic background that supports the responsibilities of the internship is essential.

Experience:
No prior working experience is required to apply for this internship. However, any relevant training, education, or advanced coursework that can benefit the United Nations during the internship will be considered an asset. The focus is on candidates who are eager to learn and contribute to the UN's mission.

Languages:
Fluency in oral and written English is required for this position. Knowledge of French, which is also a working language of the United Nations Secretariat, is considered an asset. Candidates should be able to communicate effectively in both languages to fulfill the internship responsibilities.
