Job Overview:
The Resident Coordinator (RC) serves as the highest-ranking representative of the United Nations development system at the country level. This role involves leading the UN country team, ensuring accountability for the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework, and coordinating UN support for the 2030 Agenda. The RC is responsible for fostering partnerships with government, civil society, and other stakeholders to address national development needs and challenges. The position requires a deep understanding of the UN's mission and the ability to navigate complex political environments to advocate for sustainable development initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Resident Coordinator has a wide range of responsibilities, including representing the UN at high levels of government, leading the development and monitoring of the UN Cooperation Framework, coordinating system-wide support to the government, and promoting the values and principles of the UN Charter. The RC is tasked with engaging diverse partners, conducting context and trend analysis, and advocating for the SDGs. Additionally, the RC manages funding for joint UN efforts, oversees security coordination, and fosters an enabling environment for collaboration within the UN system. The role also involves integrating humanitarian and development efforts in conflict and post-conflict settings and ensuring the implementation of protection strategies against sexual exploitation and abuse.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a Master's degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in relevant fields such as development studies, international relations, or social sciences. A first-level university degree with relevant experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced degree. The position requires a minimum of 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, including five years in development, human rights, or humanitarian work at the country level. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator or in security decision-making is desirable, along with strong political acumen and the ability to engage with senior government officials and stakeholders.

Educational Background:
A Master's degree in development studies, international relations, political science, economics, social sciences, human rights, law, or closely related fields is required. Alternatively, a first-level university degree with relevant experience may be accepted. The educational background should provide a solid foundation for understanding complex development issues and the UN's role in addressing them.

Experience:
Candidates should have at least 15 years of substantive experience in leadership roles at the international level, with a focus on development, human rights, or humanitarian work. This experience should include at least five years of cumulative experience at the country level outside of their own country. Previous experience as a Resident Coordinator or in a senior security role is highly desirable, as is experience in managing humanitarian programs and engaging with diverse stakeholders.

Languages:
English and Spanish are mandatory for this position, with English being required at UN Level III for reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Spanish is also required at the same level. Familiarity with French is considered an asset, but not mandatory. Proficiency in these languages is essential for effective communication and advocacy within the UN system and with external partners.

Additional Notes:
The position is classified as an A duty station, with a duration of assignment of five years. The start date is set for November 2026, unless the incumbent is reassigned earlier. Candidates must be members of the Resident Coordinator Pool and can apply if they have one year or less of service remaining in their current duty station.
