Job Posting Organization:
The Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (RLC) is a part of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. It is responsible for addressing regional priorities related to security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">security" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">food security, agriculture, and rural development. The RLC was established to ensure a multidisciplinary approach to programs and to identify priority areas for action in the region. It collaborates with various departments and divisions at FAO Headquarters to develop and oversee strategic responses to regional needs. The office also maintains relationships with regional institutions and supports policy dialogue, capacity development, and resource mobilization efforts across Latin America and the Caribbean.

Job Overview:
The Statistician position at the RLC focuses on the development of food, agricultural, and rural statistics across the region. The role involves providing comprehensive technical, statistical, analytical, and policy analysis services. The Statistician will be responsible for developing specialized tools, methodologies, and databases to support the planning, implementation, and monitoring of the organization's work. This includes conducting research, data collection, validation, and analysis to support the development of technical standards and policy proposals. The position also requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including national and regional offices, to enhance the quality and effectiveness of agricultural statistics.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties of the Statistician include planning and leading components of multidisciplinary teams, developing technical frameworks and methodologies, conducting research and data collection, providing technical advice to regional and country offices, promoting international cooperation, and participating in capacity development activities. Specific responsibilities also include advising on agricultural censuses and surveys, advocating for the Food Insecurity Experience Scale, supporting the development of national Strategic Plans for Agriculture and Rural Statistics, and representing the RLC in various statistical bodies. The Statistician will also be involved in resource mobilization activities and will support the preparation of country reports related to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, economics, agricultural economics, or a related field. They should have at least seven years of relevant experience in compiling and analyzing food and agricultural statistics, as well as experience in coordinating high-level statistical publications. Proficiency in English and intermediate knowledge of another FAO official language is required.

Educational Background:
An advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field such as statistics, mathematics, economics, or agricultural economics is required for this position. This educational background is essential for understanding the complexities of agricultural statistics and for developing the necessary methodologies and tools.

Experience:
Candidates should have a minimum of seven years of relevant experience in the field of food and agricultural statistics. This experience should include work in national or international organizations and involve the coordination of statistical publications and dissemination platforms. Experience in field positions and knowledge of various statistical methodologies is also highly valued.

Languages:
A working knowledge (proficiency - level C) of English is mandatory, along with intermediate knowledge (level B) of another FAO official language, which could be Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish. Additionally, a strong command of Spanish is highly desirable for this position.
