Job Posting Organization: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is a leading research institution established in 195
It is known for its groundbreaking work in the field of particle physics and technology. CERN employs a diverse workforce of over 2,500 staff members and collaborates with thousands of scientists from around the world. The organization operates in multiple countries and is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of science and technology, fostering an environment of innovation and collaboration.
Job Overview: The Refrigeration Research Engineer will be an integral part of a new R&D team within the EP-DT-DC section at CERN, focusing on developing innovative detector cooling solutions for ultra-low temperature applications using Krypton. This role involves taking projects from initial concept through to working prototypes, which includes designing novel concepts, performing simulations, preparing prototypes, conducting experiments, analyzing results, and publishing scientific findings. The engineer will work closely with a small team of experts and will also have the opportunity to mentor and guide students, contributing to the educational aspect of the organization.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Take projects from concept to working prototype, ensuring that all phases of development are executed effectively.
Design novel concepts for cooling systems and perform supporting simulations to validate designs.
Prepare prototypes and conduct experiments to collect scientific data that will inform further development.
Analyze experimental results and publish scientific findings in relevant journals or conferences.
Collaborate with team members to share insights and improve project outcomes.
Mentor and guide students, providing them with valuable experience and knowledge in the field of refrigeration engineering.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must be nationals of a CERN Member or Associate Member State. A professional background in Mechanical and Thermodynamic Engineering or a related field is required. Candidates should have either a Master's degree with 2 to 6 years of post-graduation professional experience or a PhD with no more than 3 years of post-graduation professional experience. Additionally, candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Educational Background: A Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Thermodynamic Engineering, or a closely related field is required. Alternatively, a PhD in a relevant discipline is acceptable, provided the candidate has limited post-graduation experience. The educational background should include a strong foundation in engineering principles, particularly those related to cooling systems and thermodynamics.
Experience: Candidates should have proven experience in the development of experimental cooling systems, including both design and operation. Experience with ultra-low temperature refrigeration or cryogenics is essential. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience building and operating test setups, demonstrating a practical understanding of the engineering processes involved.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory, as it is the primary language of communication at CERN. Candidates should also have a commitment to learn French, which is beneficial for integration into the local community and workplace.
Additional Notes: The position is a full-time role with a contract duration of 24 months, with the possibility of extension up to a maximum of 36 months. Working hours are set at 40 hours per week, and the role is fully onsite. The target start date for this position is March 1, 202
