Job Overview: The Computing Engineer position at CERN involves contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of software and computing systems that support the operation of the CMS experiment, one of the largest physics experiments at the LHC. The position also entails transitioning from an existing Java/JSP-based system to a newly developed PHP/Python/Django/Vue-based system (GLANCE), ensuring a smooth user experience throughout the process. The candidate will act as the lead developer for the 'Incubator' module, which handles CMS-specific features within GLANCE, and contribute to improving documentation by gaining in-depth knowledge of both the old and new CMS management software suites.
Duties and Responsibilities: The primary duties and responsibilities of the Computing Engineer include:
Providing support to users of the current CMS management system, ensuring prompt resolution of issues and delivery of new features as resources allow.
Contributing to the transition from the existing Java/JSP-based system to the new PHP/Python/Django/Vue-based system (GLANCE), ensuring a seamless experience for users.
Collaborating with physicists and computing specialists to gather and implement new requirements for the CMS experiment.
Acting as the lead developer for the 'Incubator' module, which is responsible for handling CMS-specific features within the GLANCE system.
Gaining in-depth knowledge of both the old and new CMS management software suites to enhance documentation and user support.
Engaging in the design, implementation, and testing of complex software systems, utilizing modern web tools and software development infrastructure.
Administering databases such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, and MySQL, and providing direct support to end users.
Participating in the overall improvement of the CMS software tools and systems.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must meet the following qualifications:
Nationality of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
A maximum of two years of professional experience since graduation in Computer Science or a related field by the application deadline.
The highest educational qualification must be either a Bachelor's or Master's degree.
Candidates must not have previously held a CERN fellow or graduate contract.
Applicants without a university degree are not eligible, and those with a PhD are also not eligible for this position.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field. The compensation includes a monthly stipend ranging from 5196 to 5716 Swiss Francs, which is tax-free and dependent on the candidate's degree.
