Job Overview:
The Interpreter position is crucial for facilitating communication between English and Rohingya speakers within the context of the United Nations' operations. The role involves providing accurate interpretation of documents and materials, ensuring that the intended message is conveyed effectively. The Interpreter will also be responsible for producing audio recordings in Rohingya, which will be utilized in outreach efforts across various platforms, including social media and the IIMM website. This position requires a commitment to meeting deadlines and maintaining high-quality standards in interpretation. The Interpreter will work closely with the Mechanism's language services team to address any linguistic challenges and ensure consistency in terminology. This role is expected to last for a duration of six months, and the successful candidate will work remotely, allowing for flexibility in their work environment.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Interpreter will have several key responsibilities, including:
  • Providing accurate interpretation from English to Rohingya and vice versa for various documents and materials on an ad-hoc basis.
  • Creating audio recordings in Rohingya of the interpreted texts for use in outreach products distributed via Facebook, the IIMM website, and other channels.
  • Participating in regular meetings with the Mechanism's language services team to discuss lexicons, terminology, and any interpretation-related issues.
  • Completing any additional tasks as assigned by the Front Office or the Collection, Analysis and Sharing Section (CASS) of the IIMM. The role requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and a commitment to delivering high-quality interpretation services.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates must possess a university degree (Bachelor's or equivalent) in a relevant field. Alternatively, a university certificate or diploma combined with two additional years of relevant professional experience in interpretation may be accepted in lieu of a degree. Furthermore, candidates should have at least four years of relevant professional experience in interpretation. Experience in providing interpretation or translation services in support of criminal investigations or related fields is highly desirable. Additionally, experience working in field missions within the United Nations Common System or other international organizations is also considered an asset.

Educational Background:
The educational background required for this position includes a university degree in a relevant or related field. In cases where candidates do not hold a degree, a university certificate or diploma along with two years of additional relevant professional experience in interpretation may be acceptable. This flexibility allows for a broader range of applicants who may have gained significant experience in the field without formal academic qualifications.

Experience:
The position requires a minimum of four years of relevant professional experience in interpretation. Candidates should have a proven track record of providing interpretation services, ideally in contexts related to criminal investigations or international organizations. Experience in field missions, particularly within the United Nations or similar entities, is also highly valued, as it demonstrates the ability to work in diverse and challenging environments.

Languages:
Fluency in both English and Rohingya is mandatory for this position, as the role involves direct interpretation between these two languages. Additionally, knowledge of another language spoken in Myanmar is considered desirable, as it may enhance communication and understanding in various contexts.
