Duties and Responsibilities: The Driver's primary responsibilities include: driving UNHCR vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel, delivering and collecting documents and other items, and meeting official personnel at airports or other locations while facilitating immigration and customs formalities. The Driver is also responsible for the day-to-day maintenance of assigned vehicles, which includes checking oil, water, battery, brakes, tires, and ensuring that vehicles are roadworthy and meet established security standards. Minor repairs may be performed, and arrangements for other repairs must be made as necessary. The Driver must keep the vehicle clean and ensure that all required documentation for passengers and cargo is valid. In the event of an accident, the Driver is required to follow the necessary procedures as outlined by rules and regulations. Additionally, the Driver is expected to log official trips, daily mileage, gas consumption, and other relevant data. Following security guidance and instructions from supervisors is paramount, as is the ability to identify and manage risks in the area of responsibility.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a valid driving license and have a solid understanding of driving rules and regulations. Essential qualifications include a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, with completion of primary education or a high school diploma. Knowledge of basic vehicle mechanical skills is also required. The ideal candidate should demonstrate accountability, analytical thinking, client and results orientation, commitment to continuous learning, effective communication, organizational awareness, planning and organizing abilities, teamwork and collaboration, and technological awareness.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes at least primary education or a high school diploma. An associate diploma or certificate in a relevant field is desirable but not mandatory. Candidates must also hold a valid driving license, which is essential for the role.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 2 years of relevant driving experience. Candidates with at least 3 years of professional driving experience, particularly in challenging environments, will be preferred. Experience driving Toyota 4x4 vehicles suitable for difficult terrains is highly desirable, as is experience in degraded security environments where adherence to safety instructions is critical.
Languages: Knowledge of English is mandatory, along with the UN working language of the duty station if it is not English. For General Service jobs, proficiency in English and/or the UN working language is required. Additionally, understanding and speaking local languages, particularly Swahili, is advantageous. A B2 level proficiency in required languages is expected, while knowledge of French is considered a desirable asset.
