Job Overview: The Innovation Manager Data Science, also referred to as the Data Science Lead, is a pivotal member of the Solutions team at UNICEF. This role encompasses the responsibility of providing strategic vision and technical expertise for data science initiatives. The Data Science Lead will engage in various activities, including leading the Solutions team's strategy for data science, providing knowledge leadership for the Venture Fund's investment strategy, and offering technical guidance for early-stage, open-source technology solutions. The position requires collaboration with consultants and internal teams to ensure cohesive engagement in data science practices across the organization. The Data Science Lead will also represent UNICEF in relevant forums and advocate for best practices in data science.
Duties and Responsibilities: The key functions of the Data Science Lead include: leading the strategy and vision for data science activities within the Solutions team; providing strategic and knowledge leadership to the Venture Fund’s investment strategy; engaging with selected Venture Fund investees to offer technical support for open-source technology solutions; coordinating with various UNICEF divisions and offices to ensure cohesive data science practices; and participating in internal and external forums to advocate for data science standards and best practices. The role also involves overseeing technical guidance for prioritized initiatives within the Office of Innovation and ensuring alignment with organizational priorities.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a Master’s degree or equivalent in fields such as Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or Data Science. They should have at least 8 years of relevant work experience leading data science initiatives, including the development and validation of machine learning models. A proven track record in applying advanced analytical methods to guide innovation strategies and experience in providing technical leadership to diverse teams and stakeholders is essential. Candidates should also demonstrate strong communication skills and the ability to build partnerships across various stakeholders.
Educational Background: The educational requirement for this position is a Master’s degree or an advanced university degree in relevant fields such as Computer Science, Economics, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, Physics, or Data Science. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of data science and its application in UNICEF's initiatives.
Experience: The position requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience in leading data science initiatives. Candidates should have experience in developing, training, and validating machine learning and predictive analytics models, as well as a demonstrated ability to apply advanced analytical methods to support innovation strategies. Proven experience in providing technical leadership and coordinating cross-functional data science work is also necessary.
Languages: Fluency in English is mandatory for this position. Knowledge of another official UN language, such as Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish, is considered desirable.
