Job Overview:
The Chief Impact Officer (CIO) is a pivotal executive role based in Nairobi, directly reporting to the CEO. This position is responsible for ensuring that Action Against Hunger USA’s strategies, programs, and partnerships deliver measurable and evidence-driven impact. The CIO will be tasked with designing the organizational impact strategy, enhancing program quality across all country offices, aligning operational systems with strategic outcomes, and representing the organization at both regional and global levels. This role is crucial for fostering a culture of accountability and excellence within the organization, ensuring that all initiatives are aligned with the overarching mission of combating hunger effectively.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Chief Impact Officer will undertake several key responsibilities, including:
  • Developing and overseeing a comprehensive impact strategy that emphasizes technical excellence and program quality.
  • Aligning organizational goals with measurable humanitarian and resilience outcomes to ensure effective program delivery.
  • Serving as the regional representative in Nairobi, supporting and holding Country Directors accountable for high-quality programming and resource utilization.
  • Cultivating values-driven leadership across multi-country teams to enhance collaboration and effectiveness.
  • Ensuring operational excellence by establishing cohesive systems, workflows, and accountability standards across all country operations.
  • Safeguarding program integrity, fiduciary responsibility, and risk management practices.
  • Leading evidence-based design" style="border-bottom: 1px dotted #007bff !important;">program design, learning, and technical rigor across various sectors, promoting continuous improvement and accountability to affected populations.
  • Engaging with stakeholders, including donors, UN agencies, governments, and alliances, to advance joint impact initiatives.
  • Translating program evidence into compelling insights that strengthen funding, policy influence, and organizational credibility. 1
  • Championing Action Against Hunger’s thought leadership on a global scale. 1
  • Establishing frameworks, tools, and systems for outcome measurement and transparent reporting, while leading innovation and adaptive learning across all program portfolios.

Required Qualifications:
Candidates for the Chief Impact Officer position must possess progressive senior leadership experience, with a minimum of 20 years in the field of international humanitarian assistance and development. Additionally, candidates should have at least 10 years of experience in shaping strategy development, impact measurement, organizational planning, accountability, and organizational effectiveness. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role, as is fluency in English. Working proficiency in French and/or Spanish is strongly preferred. Proficiency in MS Office 365 and SharePoint is also required, with minimal IT support expected.

Educational Background:
An advanced degree in Social Sciences, International Development, Agronomy, Natural Resources Management, Public Health, or a related field is required for the Chief Impact Officer position. This educational background is crucial for understanding the complexities of humanitarian assistance and development work, as well as for effectively leading the organization’s impact strategies.

Experience:
The ideal candidate for the Chief Impact Officer role should have extensive experience in senior leadership positions, particularly in international humanitarian assistance and development. A minimum of 20 years of progressive leadership experience is required, with at least 10 years dedicated to shaping strategy development, impact measurement, and organizational effectiveness. This level of experience is essential for navigating the challenges and complexities of the role and for driving the organization’s mission forward.

Languages:
Fluency in English is mandatory for the Chief Impact Officer position. Additionally, working proficiency in French and/or Spanish is strongly preferred, as this will enhance communication and collaboration with diverse stakeholders and partners across different regions.
