The organization has been actively responding to the humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria for five years, providing essential services to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and host communities. FHI 360 operates in multiple countries and employs a diverse workforce dedicated to making a positive impact in the communities they serve.
Job Overview: The Assistant Technical Officer-Water & Sanitation Hygiene (ATO WASH) will play a crucial role in providing technical and programmatic support in one of the three field sites in Northeast Nigeria. This position is vital in addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis, particularly in IDP camps and host communities where access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene is severely limited. The ATO WASH will work under the supervision of the Field Coordinator to implement various activities related to water supply, sanitation, environmental health, and hygiene promotion. The role requires collaboration with community volunteers and stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of WASH services and to promote hygiene practices among the affected populations. The ATO WASH will also be responsible for conducting water quality testing and developing maintenance schedules for latrines, ensuring that all activities align with the project goals and objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities: The ATO WASH will be responsible for implementing WASH activities according to the project proposal, ensuring proper maintenance and use of WASH equipment. Key responsibilities include developing and utilizing appropriate materials for hygiene promotion and training community-based hygiene promotion volunteers. The ATO WASH will be tasked with timely reporting on program activities, representing FHI 360 in external forums, and assisting in the coordination and supervision of all WASH activities in IDP camps and communities. The role involves conducting water quality surveillance and testing, monitoring the supply chain of WASH non-food items (NFIs), and ensuring safe waste management practices in the camps. The ATO WASH will compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly plans and reports on WASH activities, and may be required to undertake additional duties as needed.
Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess a B.Sc. or B.Eng. in Civil Engineering, Water Resource Management, or a WASH-related degree/qualification. A minimum of 1-3 years of relevant experience in WASH activities, particularly in humanitarian relief settings, is required. Familiarity with the Nigerian public health sector systems, NGOs, and community-based organizations (CBOs) is highly desirable, along with an understanding of the WASH context in Northern Nigeria. Candidates should demonstrate a sound understanding of humanitarian assistance programming and possess the ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
Educational Background: The educational background required for this position includes a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Water Resource Management, or a related field. Candidates should have a solid foundation in WASH principles and practices, particularly as they pertain to emergency situations and humanitarian responses.
Experience: The position requires candidates to have at least 1-3 years of relevant experience in WASH programming, particularly in emergency or humanitarian contexts. Experience working with IDPs and in challenging environments is highly valued, as is familiarity with the specific challenges faced in the Northeast Nigeria region.
Languages: Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory, as well as fluency in Hausa. Knowledge of additional local languages may be considered an asset, enhancing communication with community members and stakeholders.
Additional Notes: This position is full-time and may involve working in challenging conditions due to the humanitarian context. FHI 360 is committed to safeguarding and providing a safe environment for all employees and beneficiaries. The organization adheres to strict safeguarding policies and conducts thorough screening checks for all applicants.
